I am trying to get my xp to connect to the web, it was working before I had to reinstall. I am hard wired into the Lynksys WR&54G2 V1 router which is working fine while booted into win7 and 2 wireless laptops. I have Quest DSL.
Symptoms are it just keeps showing "aquireing network address" and when I try to turn on win firewall it says "cannot register DNS".

I have included the net test.txt and a pic of cmd ipconfig/all.

Its showing you dont have a network adapter so you must not have the right drivers for it or its disabled in the bios does it show up in device manager ok

I checked device manager and shows that both the network and 1394 or whatever are working with no problems. I tried just finding the driver for my adapter but xfxforce didn't have anything listed just for the adapter "Nvidia nforce controller".

I have the latest drivers installed but went ahead and uninstalled them then reinstalled them with the same results. I think I will try hooking my pc directly to the modem, bypassing the router and see if that does anything. Will keep you posted and thanks for the help, I really appreciate you people.

I tried connecting directly to the modem and it made no difference. The adaper is working when I am logged into win7 it is just in XP that I am having problems.

sorry for skipping this thread for so long but had some major home issues and am back. I manually entered all the info under internet protocall and now it says I am connected but to what I don't know as still won't conect to internet. went back to internet protocall and saw that I didn't have any DNS address listed so looked it up and is hsd1.wa.comcast.net, however it asks for a numerical address (***.***.***.***.) and I could not find this. Can you explain where to find this address?

Comcast DNS server addresses are listed below:

to manually configure your DNS servers, you may use the IPv4 addresses 75.75.75.75 and 75.75.76.76, and IPv6 addresses 2001:558:FEED::1 and 2001:558:FEED::2.

    Alternatives are OpenDNS e.g. Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4
    :)

    OK here's what I have.
current settings entered manually- IP 192.168.1.2
this is for local conn 6 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    default gateway 192.168.1.1
    DNS address 75.75.75.75
    alt DNS 75.75.76.76

Under network connections I have 3 showing 1394 connection
    Enabled
    1394 net adapter

Local area Connection 5 (when I enable this it says cable not connected)
    disabled (Lan Connection?)
    10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet

    Local area connection 6
    Enabled
    10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet

Connection Icon in taskbar shows Local connection 6 connected at 100Mbps just shows connected, nothing about internet.

hope this helps as I aqm at my wits end. LOL
