    Hey guys!

We have a wireless router at home. A D-Link if it matters. We don't want to have wires going from the router's room to my room so currently my desktop has no internet connection.

What solutions do I have besides wires? I know of USB wireless plug thingies but I don't feel like this is adequate as it's very important that I get as little ping/lag since I play online games. It's my main computer activity. I'm a videogame design student.

I also heard of wireless network cards. Do those work on any modern computers? Mine is self built. How do I know if a wireless network card will be compatible with my computer? Also, are wireless network cards efficient and reliable for gaming or do they cause high ping/lag?

    Thanks!

Wireless isnt good for gaming you best bet is to get homeplugs they simply plug into the mains one near the router with a network cable to the router and one plug in your room with a network cable and the jobs done. Depending on which one you get they are a lot fast more secure and dont suffer from other wireless problems

Thanks for your swift reply Samuria!

I'm sorry though, I've never even heard of homeplugs. Can you elaborate on how they work for me? What do you mean they simply plug into the mains one? Mains one what?

Also, I'm not sure if this is relevant, but I live in Canada. Do those things work here too? They look like electric outlets to me.

    Sorry, I'm a little confused.

It really is that simple they are like mains plugs and they use your mains. Simp0le plug one in near the router plug the network cable from the router to the plug. Plug the second one in your bedroom plug the network cable in and that is all there is to it. Some may require you push a button if you want to encrypt traffic.

They are very fast the new one can reach over 500 meg but you need a gig network card for that

I'm not sure what you mean by "mains".

Do you mean electricity plugs? They're plugged into the electricity outlet, then I put a network cable from my router to the houseplug, then I put another one in another electricity outlet in my room then can get internet from there?

They can actually transfer internet through the house's electricity wiring?

    Wow that's crafty!

A little expensive but that's what I'll go for. Thanks a lot! :D

Oh just to be sure, I need a "twin pack" right? Both units are the same thing or do I need a giver and a receiver?

You need a twin pack and if you add any more they have to be the same type as they vary in speed etc. Its not worth getting one that goes above 100meg as that is the pc limit on most network cards

Contrary to popular belief, I have extremely good results just using an inexpensive USB wireless adapter on my other desktop...it's plenty fast as long as you understand that real-time gaming needs the full spectrum of your internet connection.

That means only one computer accessing your internet while you're gaming...other computers, TV's connected to internet, wireless phones using the internet, or other gaming consoles should not be in use when using your computer for gaming.

Your router simply divides your internet speed amongst all the devices trying to use it at the same time...this is where most folks make the mistake of thinking their wireless connection is not fast enough...it's fast enough as long as you remember to use only one device while your playing real-time games.

I'm now in the games industry, went to BETA tester, did a degree I wished in May and I'm now working as an A.I programmer, I've gone the home plug route from my main PC, PS3 and 360 from them being wirless , never looked back, you get what you pay for :).

    Got a D-Link homeplug!

Will be trying it soon, I'll let you guys know how it goes.

A bit pricy (102$ CAN with taxes for both outlets) but it's worth it if it works nicely!
