I recently got the blue screen while just on netflix the other day. Now I can't access my computer (unless on safe mode) without it popping up. I've restored my comp to an earlier date (a week before it happened), ran various virus/malware/spybot programs (all free), and had a friend do random stuff but to no avail. I would love to fix this without having to pay someone else or buy any programs. Currently I can only run in safe mode. Some info on the bsod: I got the error code 0x0000008E and filename ataport.SYS (obviously there was more but these are the basics) need anymore information? thanks ^.^
Melissa, From your post, I assume that you have more than a bsod problem. Now as an easy one: Boot into safe mode and choose to restore to an earlier system restore point. Pick a restore point before the problem occurred. Here is a write-up on system restore points, and yes, you have system restore points unless you have run one of those super-dooper, speed up your computer programs. RESTORE TO A PREVIOUS SYSTEM RESTORE POINT 1) WIN | type SYSTEM RESTORE | ENTER | NEXT |Choose a different restore point radio button | NEXT 2) Show more restore points checkbox (lower left) 3) Highlight the desired restore point 4) Scan for affected programs (lower right)make a note of affected programs 5) CLOSE | NEXT | FINISH WIN = key with the wavy Microsoft flag on top. ===========================================
Well i've restored it to the latest point i could, still got the blue screen. UPDATE: upon closing firefox last night after posting this, my desktop was empty. i opened start..empty. i hovered over "all programs" and it says, guess what...empty. i open my folders (documents, photos, music, ect.) they all say "this folder is empty" although i have a ton of music, photos and ebooks. i ctrl+alt+delete and physical memory jumps from 30% to 90% usage, but when i go to processes barely anything is running except windows stuff. this leads me to believe there is a serious virus in my computer. performance is of the charts considering i no longer have anything on my computer to run ohh, and it won't let me restore anymore. every since everything disappeared, i try system restore and it says "initializing", and just stays there. i left it and came back 45 min later and it still just said initializing.
Melissa, You are correct. You have malware. Please click on PreWork in my signature and follow procedure there so that we can get you moved to the malware removal section immediately.
alright, i did step one and two in the prework. apologies if this is a stupid question, but it says "Please Attach the contents of these logs for review by our Security Team" and "Attach the contents of aswMBR.txt in your post for review by our Security Team" what post do i attach them to? this one to you? or some other thread? thanks.
View attachment OTL.Txt View attachment Extras.Txt View attachment aswMBR.txt also i started a new thread here: http://www.pchelpforum.com/new-hijackthis-logs/131439-logs-requested-prework.html#post821695 is that where i was supposed to post that info? also, thank you eternally for your help!
There are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer. Please note that as long as you are using any form of P2P networking to download files you can anticipate infestations of malware to occur. P2P file sharing used to be fairly safe. This is no longer true; continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk! Keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation. References... citing the risk factors, of using P2P programs: How cyber criminals infect victims via P2P with pirated software on Vimeo Malware: Help prevent the Infection Perils of P2P File Sharing How to Prevent the Online Invasion of Spyware and Adware I strongly recommend that you uninstall: µTorrent You can do so using the Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs function. However, that choice is up to you. As long as you have the P2P program(s) installed, per PCHF Policy, We can offer you no further assistance. If you choose to remove these programs, when finished: Please generate a new set of OTL logs and we'll go from there.
i uninstalled utorrent, i don't even use it. a friend put it on here (along with frostwire, which i also uninstalled). here are the new logs: View attachment OTL.Txt View attachment Extras.Txt View attachment aswMBR.txt
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from Malwarebytes.org. Alternate link: Download Mirror (Note: if you already have the program installed, just follow the directions. No need to re-download or re-install!) Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application. (Note: if you already have the program installed, open Malwarebytes from the Start Menu or Desktop shortcut, click the Update tab, and click Check for Updates, before doing the scan as instructed below!) Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan. The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. If you are prompted to restart, please allow it to restart your computer. Failure to do this, will cause the infection to still be active on the computer. Please save the log to a location you will remember. The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM. The log can also be found at C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply. If Malwarebytes fails to download please use the following link: http://malwarebytes.org/mbam-download-exe-random.php
