    Hi all,

My girlfriend has just got a new laptop with vista business. I have been trying to add it to our wireless network (netgear) all day and can't get it to work.

Initially the PC said it had found the network. I clicked it, typed in the WEP key etc... After I restarted it found the network but said that there was "limited connectivity".

I tried again, but now the network will not show up at all. I have connected the PC directly into the wireless router and it works fine, all the other PCs in the house (and 1 mac) work fine. Can anyone help me out here? This is my first time using vista and i'm finding it very frustrating.

Hey vaughan80, my welcome to PCHF :)

Could you please try repairing the connection by right-clicking the icon in the taskbar and then clicking Diagnose and Repair. It should run through a series of tests and try to fix the issue for you.

    Thanks,

I have tried this, windows states that no problems were found.

If I try and connect to wireless network my NETGEAR does not show up in the box anymore. Even if I refresh. If I refresh more than twice it then states that no wireless networks are available.

All the other computers (not on vista) connect fine.

    Hi vaugan80,

Have you tried turning off WEP so the network is unsecure for a few moments, and then seeing if it can connect? It will help us rule out an authentication issue.

I turned WEP off and tried again, I still get the same result.

I also tried manually setting up my network, I typed in "netgear" in the network name, and it claims that a network with that name already exists (strange that it cannot find it). If I click the "use the existing network" it cannot find it.

I tried giving it a new name (netgear 2), typed in the passphrase etc, but it still doesn't show in the setwork list.

    Hey vaughan80,

Could you please go to Start orb > type in cmd > right click Run as Administrator > and then type in ipconfig /all and paste the result here whilst the limited or no connectivity message is up. Also what is the make and model of the laptop?

Re: Vista & Netgear issues - Limited or no conecti

I cannot copy and paste the details from command prompt as I can't get on the net on that machine (and for some reason it wont let me). If you tell me exactly what you are looking for in this I will type it in, I put ipconfig in and got a massive list of the connections all say "media disconnected" next to them.
Strangely, the PC finds the network now, but says it has limited connectivity.

If I try to connect I get the message that "it is taking longer than usual" then it looks like it timesout and I get the error "connection unsuccessful".

If you right-click the CMD window in a blank area you should get a menu popup, on that menu click 'Mark' then highlight the output of the command and press the return key.

Then you should be able to paste it into your next post :)

    Hey vaughan80,

I will do some research and see if I can find a solution to this, did you do "ipconfig /all" rather than just "ipconfig" ? If you only did ipconfig, please paste me the results again from the ipconfig /all command instead.

Also what is the model of the Netgear router?

OK, lets try this then. Next time the limited or no connectivity message comes up. Go to CMD again and type in these commands after each other:

    ipconfig /release *Con*
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /renew

    Then see if it works.

Make sure you are close to the router when you do this, if possible right next to it :)

Done it. Sat right next to the router. Here are the results:

    /flushdns | /displaydns | /registerdns |
    /showclassid adapter |
    /setclassid adapter [classid] ]

The default is to display only the IP address, subnet mask and
default gateway for each adapter bound to TCP/IP.

For Release and Renew, if no adapter name is specified, then the IP address
leases for all adapters bound to TCP/IP will be released or renewed.

For Setclassid, if no ClassId is specified, then the ClassId is removed.
