In this thread i am going to try to provide our members info that is not common knowledge, amongst PC users..

    Tip number 1:

Info: What is the Difference Between Low Density and High Density RAM?

Many only consider SPEED when purchasing memory and often neglect an important fact that memory DENSITY is actually even more important!

So why memory DENSITY is so important? Is it related to your system when upgrading? The answer is YES!

If your system is designed for accepting DDR (Double Data Rate) memories of 184pin DIMM (usually desktops) or 200pin SODIMM (usually laptops) built, for your system to fully recognise 1GB capacity per memory slot, you need to use 'Low Density - 64Mx8 config' 1GB module. If you use 'High-Density - 128Mx4 config' 1GB module, your PC may only recognise it as HALF the size at 512MB or most of the time it will not work.
How to tell if your 1GB module is a low or high density module?
All low density 1GB modules are made with 16 chips (8 chips on each side) using 64Mx8 device.
All high density 1GB modules are made with 16 chips (8 chips on each side) using 128Mx4 device.
It costs memory manufacturers almost the same to produce Low Density 1GB modules which have 100% compatibility with all systems on the market, comparing to producing high density 1GB modules. So why would manufacturers be so foolish to produce high density 1GB modules which only have 10% compatibility with systems on the market? The reason is simple, because high density 1GB modules are mainly manufacturing process rejects/seconds that cannot be made as a low density modules. It is very much like Intel CPU, those CPU that cannot be made as Pentium 4 CPU become a slower bus Celeron CPU instead, by a down-binning process.
High Density module is by far much slower than Low Density module at same speed rating say PC3200/DDR400. A lot of users have fallen into attractive CHEAP PRICE trap by High Density module sellers and have complained that they are either VERY SLOW and/or will not run at all and sellers won't accept return!
High density modules are FAR CHEAPER, less than half the price when compare with low density modules and hence high density modules will NOT work on 90% of today's PC chipsets that require and can only use 'Low Density - 64Mx8 config' 1GB modules.
    In summary:-
LOW DENSITY modules have 100% compatibility with ALL systems and ALL chipsets.
HIGH DENSITY modules only have 10% compatibility and are VERY SLOW.
This is also why almost all Branded-Name systems such as Apple/MAC, Compaq/HP, Dell and IBM only uses LOW DENSITY modules.
However 90% of eBay are plagued with High-Density 1GB modules at very low price, and you will be wasting your precious time and money having to return those high density 1GB modules to your seller for refund. So AVOID those 'High-Density - 128Mx4 config' 1GB modules which is usually UNBRANDED and is NO NAME!
A note here: in some off chance that your MOBO may recognize H/D ram some will only recognize high density 1 GB modules as only 512 Mb!

    Bluetooth

As we all know, Bluethooth is called a Mobile Wireless Communication Standard which helps us tether devices such as phones, headsets and microphones and even a mouse. Bluetooth devices are useful but sometime hard to get to work. I hope the following links will help make the task easier for you.

    PowerLine Networking

For those of you that are curious about PowerLine Networking, I have provided a link explaining the what and hows of this type of home networking. After doing this research I have come to the conclusion that while Powerline Networking can be simple to setup and use, It is not for everyone. Aside from being slower than wired networking, PowerLine Networking doesn't work well for older homes. Fortunately when I say older homes, I mean homes older than 40 or 50 years old. Another drawback of this method of networking is the cost. The first kit will cost around $80 to $100 with each module costing $50 to $80 to expand your network. The upside is the ease of setup and the lack of wires running all over your home.:)

    HowStuffWorks "How Power-line Networking Works"

A note: you can cut the cost if you go to Amazon, but remember you have to match the units. Also here in the U.S.A. the units have to be on the same circuit,no breaker/fuse in between the circuits. This is where the older homes (50 years or less) may work at a better distance since they only had 4 to 5 breakers/fuses between circuits anyway.

Lord Chance has informed me that if you have a balanced breaker box (Breakers on the same side) the signal is suppose to go thru..:)

Another note: this type of networking is faster than wireless, according to the Youtube test i have seen..

EDIT: If you have sporatic power outages, this will make your Powerline device work less than acceptable (example assigning the same IP addy as is on another PC) just simply unplug the devices for 10 mins and this will reset them, plug back in...good to go.

HOW TO GAIN SPACE BACK IN YOUR SDD..

Several days ago I had asked for some help attempting to regain space on my 60 GB SSD. I had less than 10 GBs remaining and was trying to figure out what was using all that space. I received some great advice from several folks, but found the following information most helpful and wanted to share it with others. MS Windows 7 has a "Hibernation" capability which I believe was designed for systems with conventional HDs allowing them to “wake back up” faster than a complete boot cycle. Someone else may be able to explain in greater detail, but the bottom line is that a desktop with SSD doesn’t really gain much in performance from this capability. The Hiberfil.sys file is a hidden file in the root folder and in my case was using 16 GB of space. The articles I had read indicated the size of the file is approximately equal to how much RAM you have installed so you can see on a small SSD it eats up critical space. It’s very simple to disable this capability and since you’re using SSD you lose very little performance-wise. I’ve included two links that provide greater details at Tom’s Hardware http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-performance-tweak,2911-4.html and eHow http://www.ehow.com/how_8192676_turn-off-windows-7-hibernation.html which can walk you through the steps. Hope it helps others. :)

you can also resize the recycle bin.. right click / properties -custom size 500mb or whatever size you need , maybe delete immediately instead.. possible to get an extra 10% for you - 6gb
You can also change size of the page file or turn it off - right click C* drive , advanced system settings, performance, advanced ..
You could also use ram as the pagefile/cache .. fancy cache is is a great little program for that

I use an OCZ vertex 3 60GB ssd

JCAMD thanks for the additional information, the articles I provided links for also discuss the pagefile/cache as well. I didn't want to mess with that since the bigger bang was with the RAM. I'll have to check out the "Fancy Cache" program. You're running 3 x OCZ 60 GB SSDs? Are you using a RAID configuration?

    Using your Favorite Search Engine

The good folk of PC Help Forum enjoy helping others and it shows when you think about how long the site has been around. It also shows in the number of people helped and questions answered. Yes, PCHF is a good place for answers but let me ask you, the person needing answers, a question. Where do you think alot of your answers come from? Yes, experience is one place but another is research on the Web. Research using Google Search or one of the other search engines. I hear you friend. You say you don't understand how search works and you can never find what you need. Let me see if I can help.:)

Searching for something on the Web is just knowing what you want. Easy? Well no but it is a start. Next is knowing how to word your search query. Again it takes practice. But in the end, just typing a simple query usually gets you results. Lets start with a simple query. Lets say you need drivers for a video card.
    • Typing in video card drivers will get you generic results
    • But typing in nVidia video card drivers will get you closer.
    • Better still try something more specific. nVidia GeForce4 video card drivers This will get you even closer.
    • When you know what the card is then use as much information as you have. Things like Model number, Part number, Serial Number, as much as you can to help the search.
Google has a nice site that has some tip on how to form your search query. Give it a look. It may help with your next search. As I have said. There is a world of information on the Web. The search engine is the way to find it.

Thank you Arctos my friend. Searching is not rocket science so it should be easy enough. It is just a matter of semantics. Learning how to choose and use your words to find things. :)

I have found that searching with a spelling mistake in one of the search words, often brings up different results that are more relevant sometimes...

Strange but true Arctos. I believe it has to do with the smart algorithms used in todays search engines.

    Re: Ram
    Understanding ram...Author: Gabriel Torres
DDR, DDR2, and DDR3 memories are classified according to the maximum speed at which they can work, as well as their timings. Timings are numbers such as 3-4-4-8, 5-5-5-15, 7-7-7-21, or 9-9-9-24, the lower the better. In this tutorial, we will explain exactly what each one of these numbers mean.
