Sorry, I am new to this so I hope I am asking my question in the right forum. Anyway, I am not very tech savvy, I can maneuver through my phone's internet pretty well, but that's about it. Question : I recently got a PC for my kids to use for school. I hooked it up, everything works fine, but I didn't have the password to log on,(the computer belonged to my niece) , so I shut it down until I could get ahold of her. When I turned it back on it got stuck at the "Windows is starting up" screen. I got into it via safe mode, but now I don't know how to get out of safe mode! I've been Googling everything I can think of from my phone, but can't get out of safe mode. Can someone PLEASE help me? We are very anxious to start working on our "new" computer! If this helps, its a Dell (don't know any other info about that), and it has Windows XP Pro. Please help.

Hi there Rhonda and welcome to PCHF

If you are in Safe Mode now, the easiest thing to do would be to click on Start > Shut Down. Then re-start the PC and see if you still get stuck at the Windows start-up screen. Don't press anything apart from the power button..let's see how far you can get.

Wow! I did not expect a reply so fast! So thank you for that. Ok, I shut her down and restarted, but it's still stuck on "Windows is starting up..." Nothing is happening though. Now what can I do?

Ok. Switch it off again and right after you hit the power button, start tapping the F8 key. When you're presented with a menu, choose "Last known good configuration" and hit "enter".

Ok, did that and I'm presented with a screen that says, "Please select the operating system to start:" and the only choice is Microsoft Windows XP Professional ". I am pretty sure I have already tried this & system restore, but neither worked. But anyway, what next?

Since this computer is "new to you", there isn't any data on the computer that you want or need. I would have to suggest that you perform a Factory Restore on the PC and that will return the PC "fresh out of the box" state.

What model Dell is this? It is likely that you can safely follow Step 3 from this Dell link.

Ok. I suppose that couldn't hurt, I've only installed one program, (a World Cultures and Geography dvd-rom), I guess I can always reinstall it, right? Before it was stuck in Safe Mode none of the other games or programs would work. I always got an error message anyway. But just so that I don't overload my brain,, I would like to see what "Hengis" suggests I do next so that I might possibly get out of safe mode. But I will gladly take any advice you can give me to get this thing running it's best, thank you!

I would actually agree with Dci on this, if you have nothing on there that'll be missed, install a fresh copy of Windows and you'll be able to put your own "stamp" on the PC.

Ok, but I don't have the Windows CD... other than that, is there anyway I can get out of safe mode? If my niece ever finds the CD,(I am assuming I would need it to do that), I will definitely do that. But can you please get me out of safe mode? The computer was fine this morning., I tried to update using an upgrade companion cf and the CD got stuck, I shut the computer down and got it out, when I turned it back on it got stuck at the "windows is starting up" screen. I shut it down again and got myself into safe mode using the F8 key. (Someone once told me to do this. Unfortunately, I cannot remember what I did then to get OUT if safe mode. Right now I am at the black screen waiting for any help... Thanks for your time.

I'm sorry, I have NO idea what model it is... are there any stamps, logos, etc. on the computer that could tell me the model so that I may relay that info to you?

Just look at the back of the PC for a label. On that label you need to look for the Service Tag, it will look something like this:
    Code:
    3F4FGZ3

Ok, there's a white sticker with a barcode on it and this: 97L1K11. Is that it?
