    Hello all,

I have an R32 thinkpad running XP. For some reason when I booted it up today the sound wasn't working. I restarted, but no luck. Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

First open your device Manager and uninstall your audio driver and reboot.
Type devmgmt.msc in your run box this will open device manager find your audio device right click it then uninstall. Reboot your machine.

Try this program to get an update for your audio driver.

    http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/

You need to register the program in the link above and you get two free drivers in a 24 hour period.
Make sure and uncheck the highlighted boxes when installing drivermax.

Also take a look at the links below.

If the above fails then Download UnknownDeviceIdentifierand post the log it Creates in your next reply.
Run the program allow it to finish then hit file> save > Save the file to desktop. The default file name will be DeviceList Attach Device list in your next reply.

Hit start button at lower left hand corner of the screen. Then in the run box type services.msc. Look for windows audio/anything to do with audio and make sure the startup type is set to automatic. To do this, right click selected service select properties then change the startup type to automatic then left click apply. You will need to reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Please download the windows all in one repair tool.

Make sure all the settings are the same in the screen shots That I have uploaded for you. Make sure and back up your registry also create a restore point. This is standard for any registry adjustments.

Thanks for the quick and thorough reply.

I uninstalled the driver then used drivermax to update it.

Sound still doesn't work after reboot, and now I have a yellow exclamation point next to a speaker icon in device manager. It's labelled "3DP Edition v1.92 (SigmaTel C-Major Audio.)"

When I click properties, it says "This device cannot start. (Code 10.)"

I'm going to uninstall this then reboot and run device identifier. I will reply with the results.

Before we get into trying this and that would you mind trying a system restore and see if that will help. :)
Just try your earliest point possible please. We might save our selves a headache by trying this first.

    OK,

So I did a system restore to the beginning of August. No luck, so I undid the restore.

Been trying to go through the Tweaking All in One Repair Tool. I downloaded malwarebytes and removed the malware it found (Step 1). I ran checkdisk (Step 2) which ended in a blue screen of death for some reason. Now it wants me to do a System File Check (Step 3) but it says I need a Windows CD, which I don't have. So I'm gonna hold off running the All in One unless you think I should do it anyway.

    Thanks much.

    Alright.

So I ran All in One, but still no sound.

I then went to pcpitstop and got the driver. I think I updated them correctly, however halfway through I got a stern warning saying Windows doesn't recognize the logo. I just said install anyway, and nothing bad happened, but still no sound.

When I go into device manager and click on the Intel(r) 82801 CA/CAM AC'97 audio controller properties, It says "no drivers are installed for this device." So I would try uninstalling then reinstalling the drivers again, but I'm tired and going to bed.

    Thanks much.

    Holy Crap.

    It works.

Housemate borrowed PC couple nights ago, that's when problem began. He mentioned he used the manual volume controls on the keyboard, which I never use. Fiddled with them but didn't help.

Just now I pushed the volume down button, and all of a sudden the music file I'm playing as a test bursts through (Judas Priest, "The Sentinel")

    ech, gotta love computers.

    Thanks again, and take care.

Here this will help speed up your machine I know you did not ask for it but your getting it anyway.

Let me know how it goes after that I will mark this as solved.

    1. Right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager
    2. Left click the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers group
    3. Right click on Primary IDE and hit Uninstall if there are more than one go ahead and un-install all of them they may request a reboot but wait until you have uninstalled the last one to reboot your machine.
    4. Reboot the computer, the Primary IDE drivers will re-install themselves after you reboot.
    5. Go back to the Device Manager and Left click the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers group again.
    6. Right click on Primary IDE Channel and go to Properties > Advanced Settings tab.
    7. Make sure that both Device's Modes are on "DMA if available".

The computer doesn't seem noticeably faster, but maybe I'll notice it with more time. I think the main thing that made this take so long for me is that my computer often takes 5 - 7 minutes to start up cuz it frequently gets stuck on the manufacturer's logo screen. Although it is an old laptop and it's pretty slow.

    Take it easy, thanks again.
