I turned auto updates off and I was able to get the Updates manager to open and find 12 updates. Howewer, it would not get passed the first update after an hour. I tried a couple times. The computer freezes and I have to Hard reset it.

I am not sure what you mean "via website" I went to update website, but all it does is direct me to the update manager and I get the same result.

The problem occurs durring install. I have tried a few times to install different updates and it freezes every time, no matter how many or wich update I try to install.

it seems I can download other software because I just downloaded Internet Download Manager.

Also, I have pretty much everything from this computer backed up. Is it possible to to a clean install of vista if I can't find the disc? Thanks for the help.

    Rob,

Many "large box" computer brands include a Factory Recovery partition on the hard disk. No CDs or DVDs are required if you opt to use the Factory Recovery partition. Using this method means taking your system back to "fresh from the manufacturer" state. All user created data is removed and the system is like it was the day you unboxed it from the vendor. Access to the partition varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Dell often uses F11 following a reboot, IBM has a "blue" key, not sure about others.
