My parents just bought the wireless MiFi router from AT&T for high speed internet from the two towers we're located between. I have a lap top, so as soon as they set it up, my laptop detected the new network and connected immediately. However, I have a pretty new laptop with Windows 7. My mom, on the other hand, has a desktop computer equipped with, at the moment, only dialup. It's rather old, and has Windows XP Home Edition, service pack 3. Either AT&T seems to think that everyone has laptops, or the computer isn't 'detecting' the MiFi like it should. I can't find instructions for setting it up on a desktop computer specifically. When I go to Network Connections on her desktop computer, I see no option to set up any sort of wireless connection. Now, the router is working, because I'm using my laptop on it. There IS a USB cable that plugs into the router and into the computer, but when I plug it in, the desktop computer can't seem to figure out what to do with it.

Would anyone be able to walk me through setting this up for her? She's always had dialup and this is her Christmas present.. she's really eager to use it . And usually, I'm good at this stuff, but for the life of me I can't figure this one out. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The wireless router device that can be plugged into the computer is a Novatel Mifi 2352.

UPDATE: I figured out how to install the Wireless Zero Configuration. It is installed, and I started it, and it is on automatic. However, I still see no options for any wireless set up.

EDIT: I apologize. My mom told me she had SP2 installed, however I checked she does have SP3 installed.

The Model of the device included is a Novatel Wireless MiFi 2372: NRM-MiFi2372

I have not installed any drivers of any sorts.

Will it need a wireless network card installed? Can a normal desktop not connect to WiFi? My mom explained to the people at AT&T that she had a desktop on dialup, and they said the device they gave her will set her up.

Can she buy a Belkin F5D7050 Wireless-G 54Mbps USB Network Adapter and be able to use it?

EDIT: We have our internet through AT&T 3G network. That's what internet we're trying to get to her desktop.

AT&T MiFi on Windows XP not working?

My mother has a desktop computer with Windows XP SP3. She's trying to connect through our wireless internet service we just purchased through AT&T from their towers; it is MiFi. We recently purchased a wireless network adapter in order to pick up the wireless internet from the router we were provided. The router is a Novatel MiFi 2372. The adapter is a Cisco Linksys AE1000 adapter. We set it up with the disc and we finally see the computer icon with the three waves in our system tray to indicate that it is now capable of picking up wireless signal. Also, when I click into that, it shows our MiFi connection, with full signal strength. I click to connect it, enter the password, and then it tries to connect. It takes a while, and then the box goes away.. but nothing is connected. No error message, but no connection. I re-installed it with the disc, and when it tried connecting through the set-up, it said it was unsuccessful. It told me to check the signal strength and such, but all that is fine. So, we can't figure out what could be causing it to not connect?

I know the internet connection is working because I am using it on my lap top right now. And, the adapter appears to be working fine.. so it must be the computer, I think?

Also, if it helps, when I click 'Repair', it says: "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action can not be completed: Connecting to the wireless network"

Sorry about that, I didn't think it would fit under this thread since my original problem was that I didn't have an adapter But now I bought one and it still won't work!

The encryption shown in the Network Connections on her computer is "Security-enabled wireless network (WPA)". I did enter the password the correct way and it does not connect.

Yay! We know that's wrong then. But how would I reach the settings for the adapter? Where would that be on her computer?

EDIT: If it's under Properties for the Wireless Network Connection, and I click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the list, and hit properties there.. it was already on Obtain IP Address Automatically... so.. I assume that's the wrong place?

The adapter came with a set-up CD, however it never gave an option for any of those settings. It said nothing about the IP address, just asked me to plug in the adapter..

Under "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties", both options under the General tab for Obtain an IP address automatically were already checked when I went there, which means they were checked when I gave you that ipconfig. Also, under the Alternate Configuration, the 'Automatic private IP address' is checked, too. So, now what ?
