Most people are not familiar with roguelikes, so let me explain. It started with a game called Rogue. It is a old ASCII turn based tactical rpg with randomly generated dungeons. Since the creation of rogue, many other similar games have come out and they are referred to as roguelikes. Nearly all of them are free(although there are a few commercial roguelikes such as Chocobo Dungeon). If you are looking for a game with amazing graphics, look elsewhere. These games have very poor(if any) graphics. If you care more about fun/complex gameplay, read on... Anyways, here's a list of my favorite roguelikes and sites to download them. Warning! These games are not recommended for people who are prone to breaking things when they lose repeatedly! Expect most of these to take at least a year or two to beat(if you're lucky) Extra Warning! These games have a VERY steep learning curve. Expect it to take awhile before you get the hang of all the controls. Dungeon Crawl - My personal favorite Doom the Roguelike - Loads of fun! Good for beginners. Nethack - This is a classic, but it's a bit unbalanced if you ask me Slash'EM - This is Nethack with tons of extra suff. It's also unbalanced. Z+Angband These roguelikes feature a world map, and many quests. They are also harder than the above listed ones Adom Omega I'm only including this because it is THE roguelike. It's not nearly as good or feature complete as those listed above in my opinion. Rogue Those of you who are feeling adventurous might want to look at this link which has a list of every known roguelike(there is easily a couple hundred) If you need any help with any roguelike(learning how to play, or specific in-game difficulties), feel free to ask me or someone over at the RogueTemple
Sorry to post ages after thread was made but I just wanted to add that rogue likes are by far much better than most of the horrible games that come out now-a-days, games that you can beat in a day or two of playing. I wish developers would take a look into rogue likes and create some modern variants! Thank you for the list of rogue likes btw very helpful
