Stats for the past week crunchers.

Our ranks appear to be diminishing so let's see if we can get some new recruits to help us out in this endeavor.

Well done to all those who continue to work away for the cause.

This is looking bad, looks like we will have to get the free beer flowing again. ;)

Well done to the crunchers who crunch, and well done to the crunchers that crunch the data.

    i must say no.

No matter how altruistic the organization, I do not install such software on my computer.

I fully respect your decision, but might I ask why?

I'm just curious why so many seem reluctant to run it, yet I've had it on my machines for over ten years now with no negative outcomes.

For me the whole appeal was, and still is, that for most people the things they use their PC for such as email and light web surfing, doesn't even begin to tap into the potential their unit has, while at the same time unless people are away on vacation or such, it's best to leave PC's on anyway as they do antivirus updates etc in the background.

I figure this way, at least my investment is doing some good for mankind, plus it's a way of giving to charity that I have complete control over, as I get to decide what projects I will and won't run.

Far better in my view than handing over cash to some organization where 80% of the funds wind up going toward administration fees.

I can understand the reasons why nameisuser distrusts software like WCG uses. I did too for a great while until I found a suitable workaround. I run the software on a dedicated PC. It is an old Pent4 933Mhz machine. The cause is worthy LoneWolf. It is why I found a way to support it. :)

Appreciate that Lord Chance and thanks.

Many moons back I had my concerns as well but they've been allayed for quite some time.

I began by doing as you and dedicating a couple of machines that ran only distributed computing projects.

I did my research and observed the units carefully and have never encountered any issues at all. There were once some projects that some of us felt were a bit dubious as they were using our donated cycles and trying to profit from it.

WCG has always been trustworthy and non profit, does it for altruistic reasons, and is also affiliated with heavy hitters such as IBM, which I find comforting and a testament to their legitimacy.

I've also over a period of many years, been on the watch for any negative feedback regarding the project, and there has only ever been one person who said anything negative and quit running the project.

That person was to me what I consider the exception to the rule, in that it was a younger lad, and happened to be obsessed with gaming and performance to the point of obsession.

He felt that he could tell a minor decrease in performance when gaming. I didn't question his observation and left it at that. I've never heard the same from and others and do doubt it as the agent is designed to back off if it senses we wish to use our CPU cycles for something else.

The client is also highly configurable, which it's possible the person didn't know or couldn't figure out how to do.

Forgive my rambling but I just want to assure everyone that to the best of my knowledge, and over many years, I've not noted any negative effects, and I in fact run it on all my PC's including my main one.

I also run them far far harder than most would under normal conditions, as I have them overclocked by 25% and they run 24/7/365 100% CPU capacity.

The only caution I would ever give is to people who consider doing it using a laptop, as it most definitely would cause it to run warmer, meaning the person would have to be very good about keeping it's cooling in good condition, but really I don't feel a laptop is the best choice for such an endeavor.

I do much appreciate the contributions of those participating, and do hope that my post presents some useful information.

I can provide an ease of concern when it comes to using WCG on a laptop. I run WCG on my DELL laptop 7/24 100% CPU and have had no problems with it. I did have a problem with the laptop, but that was caused by a bad or damaged driver. Since replacing the driver, the laptop has run smoothly. The laptop provides about 25K of my points total each week. My desktop computer provides the rest of the points.

I hope this info provides some usefulness to prospectful newcomers to our band of hardy number crunchers.

Aye. LoneWolf and Gandalf have the right of it. I can confirm most of what they say because I have watched my dedicated machine closely. My only reason for not running more machines? I can no longer maintain my equipment as I should and I must ask others for help. For the good it does, I carry on with what I have. Could others do no less? :)
