I realize that the PCHF Dark style is not supported but as I find it much easier on my eyes I opt to stick with it.

That said I just switched for a moment just to see if there was anything I might be missing.

Well I got a bit of a surprise when suddenly instead of a full width web page on my screen (23" widescreen monitor) as I've had all along it suddenly changed to this narrow band in the middle of my monitor.

Wouldn't that be considered a step back given the proliferation of larger monitors on the market today?

If the Dark format can stretch full width then is it not possible for the default one to do it as well?

I'm typing in the Dark Style in this reply Wolf and it is full screen on my HP 22" monitor.

If anything is narrow it's the normal white version.

I just booted my 15" lappy and both are full screen at 1024 x 768.

    22" is running at 1680 x 1050

I have a 24" and a 22" monitor and it looks fine. It's certainly not out of the norm, maybe have a look at these fairly popular sites...

    http://www.msn.com/?st=1
    http://twitter.com/
    http://www.microsoft.com/en/us/default.aspx
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/

As far as design and form goes, it is much easier to maintain a fixed width site.

If there was enough funding generated I would be happy to have the "default" style converted to Dark. As it is, there will be no further development of the existing Dark Style...in fact, it may become neccessary to remove it all together in the future, as the site upgrades core software etc...

The "full screen" mode is not something we will be progressing.

In my opinion the dark style is not the greatest skin in the world but full screen does look better.

Removing Dark style? That'd be a shame as that's the only one that seems to capitalize on information display rather than cluttering the screen in the fixed width mode :(

I use the Dark style because it's 100% width, much easier to read and use. There are also loads of popular sites with 100%, or near-100% (80-90%) width layouts. Width is really only picked depending on the amount of information needed to be displayed on a site, it's part of the design process to determine how best to capitalize on aspects of the design in order to give the biggest emphasis on what the site needs to convey.

Anyways, would be a real shame to see the Dark style get killed off, oh well.

Well it just strikes me odd to not keep up with advancements in technology and the fact that Microsoft and MSN (same difference really) are behind the times is also no surprise.

I have about five home pages and except for one they are all full width including a couple that run on the free Simple Machines forum engine.

    Google - full width

    eBay - full width

    DFI - full width

Oh well. I'm here as long as Dark is. ;)

    Good points, all.

All of those sites have millions of dollars to spend on maintenance and design, we do not, of course. All I'm saying is that the Dark style will not work with the new version of Vbulletin (when it is released) without further financial investment.

It would always be my choice to offer the darker style as an alternative as I have first hand experience of users with sight and access issues. Do other, similar tech sites offer an alternate viewing mode? No, they do not. Would I be prepared to keep the Dark style active if there was sufficient investment into that project? Yes, of course!

I liked the Dark theme but as there were errors creeping into it, and as it was not supported any more I changed to the default scheme. :'(

I do not like the default scheme,
as it is not easy on the eyes (even after getting the cataracts removed)

I have large amounts of white space on either side of the centre strip as well.

Light blue text on white is plurry hard to read.

I know this is the modern way of the bling carp to attract the younger elements of the populace to come here to PCHF for help.

It is ******* the older experienced members who offer help freely of their time, and have to strain eye's further.

Bring back a fully working Dark Theme pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze...

Actually, most technical sites with forums have 2 forum styles that can be chosen.

    Example:

bit-tech.net Forums - Powered by vBulletin (might have to login though..)

The current skin won't work too well with VB4 either without updating it, nor would I think you'd switch to VB4 immediately as few mods will be updated to work with it for a little while yet.

That being said, I haven't yet checked out the VB4 beta to see exactly what is needed to update VB3 templates..

If it's found how much it would cost to update the Dark template, could you maybe open up a new donation pool with a specific amount of $$ so that those of us who do want to keep it, can donate towards the update of the Dark template and keeping it 100% width and everything?

    Yes, of course DL, that's a great idea. I have already (today) fired off an email to the site designers to get prices for;

    Default Theme - fluid width
    Default theme Dark
Default theme Dark - fluid width

I will let any interested parties know once I have figures.

Good idea DL, I would chuck a few dollars to this pool if Hengis fixes the Dark.

Another thing I forgot to whinge about is that mongrel bling tool bar at the bottom. We already have the necessary buttons links to click on at the top. You can save money there by getting rid of that and putting the money save towards the Dark theme...
