    Hello everyone
I should start out by saying that I am a guy who enjoys RPG and Strategy video games, Musical Instruments and classical music as well as original compositions and philosophy/mysticism.

Now, I feel bad in joining under such circumstances, but I have a challenging problem that seems impossible for me to fix.

After changing my User Account Controls to get Morrowind Overhaul to install, all my folders suddenly became 'read-only'. If I change the folder back, I open it again and it is back to 'read-only'. I can still change the file names, suggesting that it is not actually 'read-only'.
My Hard-Drive seems fine ...Has been defragged and is not slow or performing poorly.
A virus scan in Safe-Mode caught nothing (MSE). It took about five hours to scan. I tried mucking-around with UAC and different priveleges without avail.

I also found during the course of my efforts that I was able to get my comp fan to calm down a bit (a constant problem) after disabling a few processes, but svchosts is still takin 100000K+ (MSE?). Firefox is the usual culprit (-all- my memory just to explore the bloody internet!!)

I have no idea what is going on. The constant fan problem seems better but not fixed, I would say. But all my folders are still stuck-on ready only.

Any advice as to what things to look into? I couldn't find anything online that worked for the 'read-only' problem other than the HDD is dying ...which doesn't seem correct.

    Welcome to PCHF,
Do you remember any changes you made?

And the box may be ticked/filled for Read-only, but do you actually have an issue editing/saving/creating files on the system?

Under the security tab, do you have the appropriate permissions with respect to the current folder?

It is filled in, and you cannot get it to 'unfill', even if you uncheck it and click apply ...it will be filled in when you open properties again. I can still edit file names, save/create etc ...but the box is filled, so I shouldn't be able to. Very confusing.

    Hope that makes sense.

Ignore the box, as long as you can go around your work fine, it is not a problem.

Ignore it is the correct answer.

unseen4ce - You are witnessing an unseen force at work. At the folder level, the checkbox is greyed out and checked because the folder contains at least one file that is 'read-only'.

Oh, thankyou very much guys. I thought something was wrong but will have no problem ignoring from now. Heh, at first I thought my HDD was about to go and lose all my classic RPG's (the thought was like 'how will I replace hundreds of GB worth of hard to source material'). I will definetly have to back-up my data soon to allay future fears.
