I restarted my Acer Veriton M265 PC (Win 7 Pro. 32 bit) earlier today. The restart was taking hours (literally) so I turned it off and on again via the on/off switch. I've done that before in the same circumstances without subsequent problems. However, following the restart, it won't connect to the web. The network icon says no connections are available.Troubleshooting says there might be a problem with the driver for the Local Area Connection adapter and, having tried to fix it, it says the wired network adapter is experiencing problems. Since discovering the problem, I've updated my Realtek PCIe Family Controller driver, but it's made no difference. No other adapters are showing under Network Adapters in the Device Manager and there are no conflicts showing in Device Manager. I have two other computers (connected wirelessly) in the network and they connect to the web perfectly well. The ethernet cables from my main PC to the router and modem are firmly connected and, even when I wire the problem PC direct to the modem, the problem remains. Onboard LAN is enabled in BIOS. Where the ethernet cable connects to the computer, a green light is on 'solid' and an amber light flashes every 30 seconds or so. When I ping localhost, I get "packets sent = 4, packets received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss) with a round-trip time of 0 milliseconds. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
Welcome to the forum. Can download and run the network test from my signature below and get it on the pc via usb and post the results

It does show there is no network adapter if you try to setup a new network does it show up then? Have you tried rolling back a couple of days that may be a quick fix
Nothing at all shows up if I try to set up a new network. As for System Restore, I've had various computers since the mid-1990s and I've never known System Restore to work on any of them. It fails every time and it keeps failing on this computer too - even with my anti-virus turned off.. The network card isn't a 'card' in the usual sense. It seems to be a shiny metal box about 1" x 1" x 0.5" - can I just install a PCI network card in a vacant slot and connect the Ethernet cable to the new card? I wouldn't want to do that, of course, if the same underlying problem was going to prevent that card from working too.
Thanks. I'll certainly try a new PCI card. What I mean by the 'box' is - the Ethernet cable does not connect to a card inside the PC. The internal connector, whatever it is, is very small and hidden by a small shiny metal cover - 1 inch deep x 1 inch tall x 0.5 inch wide. Perhaps it's a part of the circuit board?
Bad news, I'm afraid! The new PCI network adapter arrived today and is successfully installed along with the driver. A pop-up tells me it's ready to use but I still cannot connect to the Internet. The new card appears in Device Manager and is apparently 'working correctly'. When I check the LEDs on the card, the red light is solid and the green one flashes occasionally. For all practical purposes, nothing appears to have changed but when I try your network test it now says "Cannot find the reg.txt file. Do you want to create a new file?" When I click yes, I'm taken to a blank notepad file with a flashing insertion point. Nothing else happens. Then I run the test again, with the same result. I've tried removing the network card and re-installing it in a different slot but nothing has changed. The two computers in the network that access the modem wirelessly are still working perfectly with Internet access is a good as ever it was. I'd be grateful for any ideas.
Thanks. Still showing no card try uninstalling Advanced SystemCare 5. Have you tried creating a new network doe it show up then
I've uninstalled Advanced System Care 5 but no improvement. When I try to create a new network, nothing at ALL shows up in the 'Choose the wireless router or access point' list.
When you put the new card in did you disable the old one in the bios as it may conflict with the new one. Can you post a screen shot of the device manager with the new card
The old card is disabled in Device Manager. No conflicts show there, even when both cards are enabled, but I didn't go into the BIOS. Here's a screen shot of Device Manager: The new card is the RTL8139/810x and it has the suffix '#2' as I moved it from one PCI slot to another when it didn't work in the first one.
Update: I've now disabled the onboard card in BIOS. It's now not showing in Device Manager. Sadly, however, the new card still doesn't work. P.S I've just tested the card in another machine (Win XP) and it works perfectly.
