Hello! OK, this is what I have going on- I bought 2 refurbished Gateway M460 laptops for my boys for Christmas this past year. Even though they are older computers, they are running Windows 7, and for a while were doing fine, actually. Then I had some issues with one of them(looked like a virus slowing it down), so I decided to format and reinstall the OS. The laptops came with Windows 7 recovery disks, so no problem, right? Well, it did the reinstall like it should, but then I noticed quickly it was missing drivers. Specifically, the Video, Audio, and Network Controller drivers. So, being Mr I-can-fix-anything-I'm-Dad-don't-you-know, I (eventually) got to the Gateway site, found the correct drivers for the specific laptop, install them, and get error messages saying that these drivers aren't the right ones for the version of Windows I am running! AHHHH! Needless to say, I'm stumped now.

I have searched my problem, so far nothing like it, bought these off ebay last year and the purchase is no longer in the history list. Found this site, ran the Astra program, it identified what I already knew (the 3 missing drivers), now I know what I need; help! Can someone help with this?
Note: since I bought 2 of these laptops, the one that has no problems (other that it has been overheated by child Number 1's lack of vision in keeping the cooling fan plugged IN to the laptop- rrrrrr) still will work occasionally, and it has all the original files and drivers on it, sitting there and taunting me like 'How's it feel...to want?!' Is there a way to use these?

    Recap- Gateway M460
    Windows 7
No driver for: Video Controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, Network Controller
Original drivers off Gateway Support is no good on Windows 7
Unhappy child without his 1st computer
    Thinning hair of problem-laden Dad...::teehee::

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to PCHF

Can you connect the laptop directly to the modem and get a connection?

Confirm that the drivers below do not work.

    If not then see below.

On the computer in question. Download UnknownDeviceIdentifierand post the log it Creates in your next reply.
Run the program allow it to finish then hit file> save > Save the file to desktop. The default file name will be DeviceList Attach Device list in your next reply.

Get me the log via a cd or usb device.

When you have finished this please let me know what antivirus you are going to run and I will give you a few pointers on what to do with a fresh install so that you do not run into any issues down the road.

Yeah! It worked!!! You are awesome; it took me half the day, but after4 months this laptop is now a=officially working! Drivermax was excellent, as was the Intel website. You have been very helpful and prompt with all of this correspondence. You deserve a medal for your help. Thank you, and know that you are making a certain 9 year old boy very happy today.

    Thanks,
    Eric B

Avast is a great choice

Also download the two programs below and run updated scans with them once every week or two to keep the computer running well.
    http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE
    http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=5756&file=15&evp=693ee0b20204960edfd909666f809b26

Just make sure to disable them from startup after you use them.

Also a great program to keep on the machine is Ccleaner.
    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard

You can manage startup programs with ccleaner and keep the temp files clean.

You can set Ccleaner to run with windows.See below.

I will now mark this as solved unless there is anything else.

I'll check out those programs. Ccleaner is a regular program on my computers also; very handy! Thanks; and by the way, taking notice of your user name, I suggest you get a sandwich, and soon...o_O
