*update: I backed up my computer and restored it to factory setting, since i wasnt having any luck. new problems listed in later posts* I have a HP Pavilion entertainment PC that wont start up all the way. It gets passed the start up menu and goes onto the microsoft loading screen, then it freezes on a black screen write before it usually gets to the user login. When I try safe mode start up it freezes while loading files, always at the same file, both require me to manually shut the computer off and start again, to just have the same problem. There is no error message, and the start-up test, run-in test, and the hard disk test all came back with no errors. I also tried systems recovery to the day before the windows update, but still no luck. The Last thing my computer did was a Windows update followed with the usual restart of the computer, which got me where I now am, frustrated and board, with no idea how to solve this problem. Hello brittyjean and Welcome to PCHF ! One of our excellent Tech staff will be assisting you shortly. I have marked this thread Open to attract more Tech Members. Thank You for your patience
vista is having this problem on laptops mainly after installing an update the system won't boot. it could be that your os is corrupted after the last update. There are not many options here, however i would like to search this up for you, what was the file called when your system boots and then hangs?
if you have a repair partition you could consider using that but first lets see if we can fix it without reinstall
brittyjean, First, your problem has nothing to do with the fact that you updated your system. How are you booting into safe mode? What file is problematic? How much ram does your system have? Am I correct, that presently your laptop is totally unusable?
well i ended up just backing up my data on my external hardrive and restoring my laptop back to factory settings. now it is not able to get the backup off the external hard drive and back onto the computer. [*]i plug in the hard drive [*]find it in computer [*]open it [*]click on the backup files and it opens recovery manager [*]then it scans for files to restore [*]while it is scanning i get an error message saying: [*] "Runtime error! program: G:\MINWINPC\backup.1.exe This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual . Please contact the application's support team for more information." this whole thing sucks and it is just getting worse. any suggestions to these new problems?
brittyjean, How much ram do you have? Which dv7 model do you have? You should have dv7-something. What is the something. These answers probably have no direct bearing on your problem, but they help when we are trying to merge problems and causes together. You did a factory restore as I understand your last post. Directly after that factory restore, before you did anything more: Did your computer boot up correctly? Yes or No. I'm trying to determine what works and when.
in my system information it says i have 4.00gb in Ram my model is HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC. it also says HP Pavilion dv7 Entertainment PC on the keyboard yes you are correct, i did a factory restore after doing a backup on my2TB WD My Book Essential External Hard Drive. the file it made on it is called MINWINPC and it has 2 folders in it that are titled backup Files 2011-12-08-042146" and "Backup Files 2011-12-08-051659". the second one is the only one with anything in it. an application titled "Backup.1". if it helps. When i click on the" backup.1" application it opens up recovery manager. it asks me what files i want to restore and where i want to restore my backup. i click on my OS(c. then it tells me the location my files will be restored to, C:\System Recovery files. Then it starts scanning for files to restore. this lasts a minute or 2 then the error message stated above pops up. i click ok to have another message from Microsoft windows pop up that says " RestoreWiz Application has stopped working. a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." and yes it booted up correctly. like it did the day i got it. thanks for all the help. i really am at a loss right now
brittyjean, The backup of your data--did you make that using HP software or was it a simple backup using Windows Explorer or did you use some other backup software? If the backup of data was made using HP software, then I can't help on that problem since I'm unfamiliar with HP backup software and can only recommend the HP support site. Is your only problem that you can not recover the backed up data? I realize that this is a big problem but I'm trying to ascertain if there are any other problems. In any case, unless HP comes up with a solution for you, you are looking at reinstalling all of your apps and all microsoft updates which is no trivial task. With the present state of affairs, then this is a very good time to upgrade to Windows 7 which is a far superior operating system to Windows Vista. Win 7 is what Vista was supposed to be. If you are a student, then you can get the upgrade at a rock-bottom price. Since your system does work in one sense, I would like for you to carry out the following which will provide the missing info about your system. If Speccy doesn't tell you precisely which model number you have then SIW will. HOW TO FILL IN YOUR PCHELPFORUM SYSTEM SPECS use Speccy or SIW (links in my sig) to gather FULL and COMPLETE info. The person desiring to help you does not have to search your posts for your specs. =============================================== ================================================ Did you ever register your HP computer with HP?
I will fill out that information right now, i listed most of my basic information in my first post but was unaware of the PCHELPFORUM SYSTEM SPECS for this site. i am not exactly sure what i used to back it up, when my computer wasn't loading past the Microsoft logo,i had to press f11 to get to my only options. when i clicked the restore to factory option it asked if i would like to back up my computer, so i plugged in my external, and did.i believe it was simply called recovery manager, but i am not positive. like i said in the last post, the error message refers to it as recoverywiz. so far the recovery seems to be the only problem. i did a windows update right after i restored my computer to see if it helped with the error messages i got while trying to access my backup. i do plan on upgrading to windows 7 in the near future. i do not remember if i registered with HP or not. i got this computer in 2009
brittyjean, Here is link for documentation/drivers for your computer: Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion dv7-2043cl Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English) Your full model is: HP Pavilion dv7-2043cl Entertainment Notebook PC (copied and pasted from HP website) Do you know whether you have the 32bit version of Vista or the 64 bit version? Your bios is out-of-date. I don't have a Vista system, but with Win 7 if you go to Control Panel | System then in the system section of the display it says whether you have the 32 or 64 bit version of win 7 installed.
Speccy will show you which version you have. for example, here is what Speccy shows for my system: MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1 I do suggest that at this time, after you find out if you can recover anything from the HP backup, that you upgrade to Win 7. Now would be a perfect time to make that step and I can guide you through making a clean install of Win 7 without all of the HP bloatware.
