    Hi Everyone
I wonder if you could help. Im new to the forum and am a bit of a computer thicky so any advice would be really appreciated!

I have a Linksys wireless router which has been working fine until 2 days ago. Now I am unable to connect to my wireless network. I have an inbuilt wireless adapter (Atheros AG5005G) which is showing as "Not Associated" and "No link" and the usual green bars at the bottom of my toolbar are now grey. I have a feeling this is where the problem lies in that it isnt talking to my wireless router (I'm able to get online with my old AOL modem). I've tried everything and I'm tearing my hair out as I've wasted a whole day fiddling about with my computer. If anyone has some advice I'd be really grateful!

Oh, I tried running a diagnostics test on my inbuilt adapter and it comes back as saying that the client adapter is not associated to an access point and I need to configure the radio card and set SSID and other properties. This means nothing to me! HELP!

    Thanks #!#

    Hello theflashfairy,

    Welcome to PCHF.

Have you tried resetting your router?

When you double click on the wireless icon in the taskbar, do you see your router listed there?

    Hi ya,

Yes I've tried resetting the router and reinstalling it, but part of reinstalling it involves it connecting to the internet and it keeps saying it can't connect. I tried to confuse the computer by disabling the inbuilt adapter and using the one that came with my router but that didn't work either. It just seems as though the whole wireless network has gone caput, it just doesnt want to know. I cant understand why it changed because I hadn't changed any of the settings before it went wrong. My router is listed on the list of possible wireless connections and the signal strength is excellent, but it just keeps telling me that there is no link between my inbuilt adapter and the wireless networks. The only conclusion I can reach is that my computer cant recognise the wireless networks and isn't talking to them! Also when I bring up the list of network connections (ie modems/broadband/wireless etc) on the control panel, the Internet Gateway is always disabled and I have to keen enabling it, but even once I've enabled it, my computer still wants nothing to do with anything wireless! Does that help?!!! ;)

Are you aware of any security enabled on the router that may be causing problems?

You can normally access your router page (from a working PC), through Internet Explorer, using the address 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.1. Disable any security and see if you can connect without it?

Yes its security enabled and I use 128 bit WEP security but I'll disable it and see what happens! I'm just worried that if its not secure, everyone else will use my network! I'll give it a go anyway and get back to you! Thank you for your help so far, its much appreciated!

I disabled the wireless security and reconfigured the wireless router but am still getting a message saying that an internet connection could not be detected. I don't know what else to try! Any ideas? Thanks.

    Hi flash,

From both PC's, can you do the following, and paste the results back here.

    - Go to Start, Run and type cmd
    - From the command window, type ipconfig
    - Right click on the titlebar of the command window, and go to Edit, Select All.
    - Right click on the titlebar of the command window, and go to Edit, Copy
    - Paste the results back here. From the PC that is not working, you will probably need to save the results to Notepad/Word, save it to disk and transfer it to the working PC.

Also, is the working PC connected via ethernet cable, or is this wireless also?

can I just confirm before I do this that the details I make available won't make it possible for people to hack into my computer or use my account or anything like that? If you are happy to email me on my personal email Id rather give you the information that way. My email is: **

I hope that's okay with you. Thank you

Hi flash, no these are only the address's on your local network, and cannot be accessed externally. Most local networks have a similar if not identical setup, but you can click on my username, and then click on send private message that way if you like.

Thanks for sending the IPconfig settings. As I mentioned, the settings appeared a little strange, the sort of configuration you would expect from an office/company network.

Sorry, I just want to make sure I fully understand the problem before I post the fix, so I have 3 more questions:

    1) Do you use your laptop at work at all?
    2) Do you have any dialup - VPN connections that your aware of?
    3) Do you have any firewall's installed on the laptop itself? If so, have you tried to disable these to see if your problem lies there?

    Hi MM

    In answer to your questions:
    1) No my laptop is purely a home laptop
    2) There are dial up connections listed in my network connections but in the Internet options I have ticked the box entitled "never dial up a connection"
    3) I haven't tried disabling the laptop's own firewall so I'll try that tonight and post back on the forum to let you know!

okay, I have disabled windows firewall and although my signal strength is "excellent" it still shows as "limited or no connectivity". When I go into internet explorer I am still getting the "page cannot be displayed" and "cannot find server" messages showing on the page. Is it time to get my hammer out?!!

    OK TFF,

Can you go to My Computer, Control Panel, Network Connections, and right click on Local Area Connection 2, and go to Properties. Click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and go to Properties again. Select "Obtain IP.." and "Obtain DNS.." and click on OK, OK.

Do that same for all the rest of the adaptors there (including PPP if it's showing there), and then reboot your PC and Router, and try again?

    Good Evening Mad Monkey,

I have checked my settings as suggested and the above options you mention had already been selected. I double checked them again and rebooted my router, however, as the router is configuring it stops half way thorugh and says "saving configuration failed - please check your network". The wireless connection is still showing up on my list of available connections with excellent signal strength but giving the message "limited or no connectivity".

Please let me know if you need any more info but if you have any other ideas I'd love to hear from you!!! Many thanks, Flash.
