Hi, I didn't know what section of the forum to post this on but this seemed sensible

I know there are millions of posts saying this but I can't find the answer.

Every 30 mins or so when I'm on the computer it freezes before sending me to a blue screen. It says KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR and starts talking about how I should disable memory caching and shadowing (not that I know how. It comes up error 0x00000077 or 0x0000007A and says soemthing like collecting data for crash dump.

It's a vista and I have tried regcure, disk checks, downloaded new drivers, memory diagnostic tools, virus scans (although I've never been able to scan the whole thing as the computer has always frozen before then). Some have slowed it down but nothing works. When I've finished the disk check it always seems to say there was a driver error or something but the driver it mentions seems to change every time.

Please can someone give me some advice, I'll give you any computer info that you think could help. Thank you.

Well I'm trying to do that minidump thing but I didn't have some settings selected so I now have to wait for the computer to freeze again which probably shouldn't take long, however it said when I changed the settings that since it was only going to save a small file it might not have all the information needed to fix the problem. Hopefully It will be ok though.

I've got the hijack this file and the dump thing (It says I don't have priveleges though even though I'm an admin, I'll try waiting for another crash) but my computer won't stay long enough for a full malware scan. After scanning for about three and a half hours it said it had found 1 thing but obviously it didn't have enough time to get rid of it so I don't know whether it was the thing or not. I don't know if the hijack file is useless if i didn't complete the malware thing but here it is anyway. Next I'm gonna try a quick rather than full scan.

I don't see any signs of infection in the HJT. So, let's hand you back to Madmonkey to get the BSOD taken care of. Then, if you are still having issues we'll go for a more in depth attack on malware

Hi Holly, sorry for the delay, have only just spotted this thread.

That will probably be UAC.. it's a Vista nightmare. If you go to Start, Control Panel, User Accounts and then click on Turn user account control on or off and then untick Use User Account Control..

Since your not the actual Administrator (the Administrator is an account of it's own), you have a little less control over your PC. Vista has taken this to a whole new level with UAC, which is basically designed to give applications the minimum amount of access they need to function.. which is a great idea, because it means better protection from nasties, but on the other hand, does make things more difficult from time to time. You can decide later if you want to reactivate this.

Once you have turned UAC off, reboot your PC, and then you should be able to upload your dump/log files.

Thanks, that worked great, if for whatever reason there's a problem then say, i'll wait for another freeze and then upload again.

    Great! :)

Yes please Holly, a few more would be good if possible. I'd like to catch the 0x77 and 0x7A errors too, which will help to narrow down the problem further, and also confirm the readings on this one (0xF4). I'm certain the three are related and I'm sure these are all disk related. This could be down to disk corruption, which I'm afraid is something that only a full re-install is going to cure. Other possibilities include, bad device drivers, hard drive configuration, cabling or worst case scenario, controller or early signs of hard drive failure.

In the meantime though, is there any chance you could tell me the make and model of the PC, or if the PC was custom built, take a look a PC Spec's on my signature. Has there been any hardware changes since the PC was first installed?

Secondly, can we check the drivers your currently using. Go to Start, and in the search box, type in devmgmt.msc - and then scroll down to "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers". List the devices listed here. On one of the devices, right click and go to Properties, followed by the Driver tab, and note the driver version.

hehe, no prob's Holly. The last one you posted was the same as the previous, this one should be Mini042309-01.dmp.

Just a side note, the date on your PC is wrong (1 month behind). This can just case problems with things like anti-virus software when checking to see if your virus definitions are up to date. Double click on the time on the bottom right hand corner, and you'll be able to set the correct date/time from there. :)

So there's been no hardware changes that your aware of since you originally purchased the PC? As these errors can occur if the IDE ribbon cable for the hard drive was set as Slave instead of Master.

Also, back in device manager, can you right click on each of those three devices/controllers, and then click on Uninstall. Then, click on Action followed by Scan for hardware changes which will automatically re-install them again. Restart your PC, and see if your problem returns.

I don't want to have to format :(
