The command is provided when you tested it before there is a c$ the /user: must be entered
So user is just that /user: and the username is the name of the user with a admin account on the pc your connecting to

    net use P: \\john-pc\c$ adminpassword /user:john

Once you connect ok you can save the text in notepad as connect.cmd and run it anytime you need to connect by clicking on it

The admin share is there C$ C:\ Default share so it should work. What is the network set to control panel network and sharing centre is it home?
if thats set to home then the only other thing that springs to mind is the firewall.

Do any of these commands work?
be sure to put the actual admin password in were it say adminpassword

    net use P: \\john-pc\c adminpassword /user:john
    net use P: \\john-pc\Users adminpassword /user:john
    net use P: \\john-pc\johnc adminpassword /user:john

I've turned off both firewalls, and none of the commands you suggest work. Do you think now is the time to give up?

Try this and check your setup
Also try removing the shares from these as you have c: shared 3 times which could confuse the issue just leave the c$ share

    type net share c /delete
    net share D /delete
    net share JohnC /delete

    etc

    C C:\
    D D:\
    JohnC C:\
    Program Files
    C:\Program Files
    ProgramData C:\ProgramData

Your link refers to connecting Windows 7 and XP, so doesn't seem relevant. I have deleted all the shares except Program Files and LaserJet 6L. When I try to delete these I get "This shared resource does not exist", although when I type "net share" they are shown. net use p: \\John-PC\c$ still doesn't work.

The windows 7 bit in the post 22 is the same for all O/S and thats the bit you need to try as it sets up sharing. You should go through it and check how the pc that works is setup and that should show whats different and causing the problem

I checked all the settings in your link as far as the screen "Change sharing options for different network profiles". This far, all the setting are the same on both computers. However, when I then click on Network in Explorer, on John-PC I see Computer (2), with John-PC and Sally-PC, and they are also both shown under Media Devices. Clicking on either John-PC or Sally-PC brings up the expected files.
But clicking on Network on Sally-PC brings up Computer (1), with John-PC only. Media Devices still show both PCs. Clicking on John-PC fails.
I have enabled sharing the same on both.
There must be some difference, but I can't see what it is.

Just to review we know you have used the right cmd as its worked on one pc.
The only things left is the settings for sharing network, card setting, firewall or any AV you have.
You can try mapping a drive in explorer and tick the box connect as a different user and try connecting as the normal user ie sally or john.

All you can really do is compare the settings form one pc to the other. They are both on cable arnt they not wireless.

Yes, they are cable. I think we'd better leave it there; to be quite honest I'm fed up with the whole thing. Thank you for your persistence! Computers, who'd have em.
