Dear all, Hoping someone can help me out - I was just trying to configure my desktop with Windows XP so that it would automatically login with prompting anyone to select a user (i.e. admin, default etc). Ideally, I'd like it so that a login screen doesn't even appear (my laptop is configured that way) and from start up the system just goes straight to the windows desktop. In trying to find out how to do this, web searches suggested going to 'run' in the start menu and typing something like 'passwords2' or similar. This brought up a box whereby I deleted all the user accounts save for the admin one and then deselected the 'prompt for password' (or words to that effect) option. It asked me to enter a password for the remaining admin account (I used '123') which it seemed to save. HOWEVER, when I now start up the computer, it shows the admin account as the only one, but upon entering '123' it tells me this is incorrect, ergo I cannot login to the system in any way and therefore cannot change the settings back (or rectify them to actually achieve what I wanted to do in the first place). Any help on this is massively appreciated!! Thanks in advance D.
Welcome to the forum. Have you tried the password it had before or simply pressing enter to see if its blank
Hi DPG and welcome to PCHF The actual run command is "control userpasswords2" no quote marks. When you saw this image and unticked "Users must enter a user name etc" and then reset the "Password for Administrator" it should have asked you for the original password which in theory would be nothing, no letters or digits as it were. http://www.question-defense.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/user-accounts-configuration-window.gif
Thanks for the reply (and welcome!). I tried both of those with no joy, unfortunately. I have managed to get "back in" via safe mode and then changing the user settings and passwords. However, settings and visited websites from the previous (now deleted users) have gone. Is there any way of getting these back? I suspect not because with the new user that was created, it doesn't offer system restore option because this is its first day of existance on the system. I have managed to get it to login without a password prompt now too via a programme called TweakUI. How can I ensure that the system is running solely off of one user now i.e. only one documents, one programmes, one favourites etc files/folders/directories? I have a feeling there are still others lurking on the system and slowing it down. Many thanks for any guidance.
Correct Because you deleted all other accounts you are now regarded as the sole User, all site logins, bookmarks/favourites etc are history.
