Having trouble with Windows 7 (hardware)

    Ever since I've upgraded to Windows 7..I've been having some issues with it. Usually when I access a file, loading up a game..playing a video, opening a program, etc..my screen will sometimes turn a bunch of different colors and I have to restart. At first I thought it may have been my monitor but then I kept music playing and when this happened...the music was playing but all crackled so an obvious hardware issue. It doesn't happen all the time but I've at least dealt with it 2-3 times a day. I'm on an Asus computer..Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8300 @ 2.50 GHz, 8 GB of ram, and using Windows 7 64 bit. Graphics card is Nvidia Geforce GT 220. Also my only previous OS was Windows Vista and I NEVER had this problem. Computer is only a couple of months old. If you need any more info, let me know.     I'm pretty sure that came with the Asus disc they sent with Windows 7 but I'll try downloading those and see if that fixes the issue.

    Updated the drivers and started randomly opening picture files. Instead of the screen going all pixilated, just a small part around the mouse did this time. I then got a blue screen that went away way too fast to begin to comprehend. The only word I caught was "driver." The difference this time was that Windows rebooted itself instead of me having to hold down the power button and do it myself. When I signed back into Windows 7, I got this message:

    "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown."

    Can we see the full error? Please do this to stop the PC re-booting on the BSOD screen:

    1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System (Windows+Pause works, too)
    2. Go to Advanced
    3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
    4. Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"

    Wow I just saw this. Out of the 10 or so time this has happened to me, I've only got the Blue Screen once so I'll keep trying. I'll try to replicate it.

    Alright, here we go..

    Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If problem continues, disable or remove any new installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. (I went into the BIOS and could not find such options so if anyone has any help there..)

    Well I updated all the ASUS core programs. And Arctos also recommended I upgraded to the latest nvidia drivers, I think that was it. I haven't installed any new hardware to the system. I know I read on another forum that other people were having trouble with ASUS computers so I wonder if it's their driver. I'm kind of considering going back to Windows Vista because honestly, I can watch one video..go to the next and the damn computer flips out.

    When you installed the new nvidia drivers did you uninstall the previous versions first? If not, first download and install driver sweeper then go to control panel->programs and features and uninstall nvidia display drivers. Reboot and press f8 just after the post screen and choose safe mode. Then run driver sweeper in safe mode and check the nvidia display drivers check box and click analyze. When it finds the left over drivers click clean. Once it's done repeat the analyze and clean procedure once more just to make sure they're all gone. Reboot and reinstall the new nvidia drivers again.

    Sounds like it's worth a shot, thanks a lot. I'll report my results. To answer your question, no I didn't uninstall them first UNLESS the installer did that itself but I wasn't really paying attention during the installation.
