    Hi

So, the clicking continues without the hard drive plugged in?

That is strange but I am having a similar problem, I've pre-typed this but see below:
Greetings All, I have this :
    Acer Asprire Am5641-E5620A-Q660
    3 GB Ram
    640 GB HD
    DVD
    1 TB USB
    2 TB USB
    Acer AL1916W monitor
    Acer Keyboard and mouse

This is really strange but I am surfing the web then suddenly the bottom toolbar filled up with short cuts the nature of which I can't remember, then it stopped. I didn't think much of it and was able to close them no problem, back to web surfing. About 5 minutes later I went to the kitchen for a soft drink, came back to my computer and the screen was totally blank. No cursor, no sign of life. I then give it the 3 finger salute a couple of times and no luck. OK cold boot time, I held down the power button until it shut off. Waited a bit and turned it back on. The monitor showed the usual “Acer” logo and then “no signal”. I then heard what seemed to be a few clicks and that was it, no post, no beeps, no bios loading, no attempts to access the HD or the DVD. It seems to me, from what I read on the internet, is that when the reset is lifted off the CPU, the CPU checks to see if it has ram before it even attempts to load from the BIOS. I guess it says why bother to keep going is there's no place to store variables.
Anyway after about an hour of interchanging memory, removing all the unnecessary USB devices, I realised that I need more professional help. I took it to this local repair shop that will diagnose your computer for $25. They took out the HD and put it into a stand alone tester and all it made was the clicking sound that a HD moving coil does when its on its last legs. In other words, in their opinion the HD was toast. So they put another one in my computer and still nothing. After about an hour and 3 techies on the job they said they couldn't find the fault and they had no way to test the mother board or the CPU.
Before you ask, it was not hit by lighting, kicked or bumped, the dog didn't bite it and the cat didn't urinate on it. Also when I mentioned before about all those short cuts appearing in the lower task bar, shortly after that I ran a virus check and it was ok.

Any help would greatly be appreciated, thanks in advance and take care, Vic

Have you tried removing the BIOS battery and power for 5 minutes, effectively resetting the BIOS? It's certainly a place to start...

Faulty board? My guess...or remove RAM sticks and test one at a time.
