Hey there, I think I might've jarred something internally when I gave my Compaq SR1550NX a couple shots of compressed air earlier this week. I was giving my uncle's PC a reformatting and compressed air treatment when I decided it would be a good idea to clear the dust out of my dinosaur, too.

Got his up and running...great, but then I hooked mine back up and hit this snag- it will not boot past the Compaq splash screen. I can't enter anything from there- F1, F10, ESC keys don't do anything. It just stays on that screen, and it doesn't even sound like it's laboring. I haven't tried hitting CAPS/NUM Lock to see what happens to the little green keyboard lights.

    Thanks,
    PK

    Hi PK

Do you think you could get to, and remove the BIOS battery for a few minutes (along with the power cable)?

Absolutely- I'm relatively savvy, but I'm at currently at work. I'll do this as soon as I get home at around 7:30 pm EST and report after from another's PC.

If the CMOS reset doesn't work, you might try booting with no RAM in the machine

Usually hanging on the Splash Screen means the HDD is dead...

My next 3 posts will be pictures of the BIOS battery- which I can't seem to get out. There's no easy trigger that I can see to press on with the screwdriver and I didn't wanna go scratching things up.

Are the vertical sides of the clip flexible?
Is there a catch somewhere on the clip?

Got it out, let it hang out without it for 30 minutes, then put it back in and rebooted.

At first it was the same problem, stuck at the splash screen. Then I rebooted and hit ESC (these work now) ... it said it was entering the next screen but it never did. Rebooted again and tried F1 - took me to the correct place much to my surprise. Quit out of there and then it booted as normal.

Will I have to enter setup every time now? I'm too scared to reboot and have it not work again so I'm making copies of my important things while I have this time. Is there anything I can do to prevent this happening, or will I just have to accept that it's an old machine and my hardware is gonna crap out on me relatively soon?

It is an old machine, that's a fact and yes, hardware does fail over time however, you are doing the right thing by backing up your data. If you saved the settings in the BIOS you shouldn't need to go thru that every time you boot - even if you do, you have a working solution.
