The WPA-2 key to my internet network is apparently too short, and the 'connect' button cannot be clicked. When I add a few characters, the 'connect' button suddenly becomes clickable, but the connection is denied. Help?

I also have a Zonet wireless USB adapter, but I'm not sure how to configure it.

Normally this error is you have the wrong type of encryption selected ie you have 32 bit instead of 64 bit

Is there a way to change this after the installation has been made?

It should be on the options check on the router what the encryption is it will say wpa 64bit or other options the linux needs to match it often they dont get it right so you have to enter it

If you give us the router's brand and model number, we can look it up for you.

I've ran into the "connect button not appearing" issue before, I found by tapping the space bar until it allows you to click connect works. It treated those spaces as whitespace and it did not affect the password with the Linux distrobution I experienced that on [SliTaz Linux]
