I want to get my computer with the following functionality.
    1. Run Linux
    2. Display on TV
    3. Have remote peripherals' (mouse, keyboard , gamestick)

Actually this is how I want it to work:
    1. Boot on Linux
    2. Install all installed programs as icons on the screen
    3. Run internet from USB device

Can I get advice on optimum hardware/software combination ?

Err right, well I suggest you build the system, install Linux and then get back to us if you have issues.

This is like like saying to a glazier I want a pane of glass this big and he says how big is the window and you say well I haven't built it yet.

My question is "Can I get advice on optimum hardware/software combination ?" . If I had already built the system I wouldn't be asking for hardware "configuration" right ?
    Thanks for your help.

Well the original question seemed to me to be how to connect your pc to the tv which would then lead one to assume you already had a working pc.

This is kind of confusing Dan because you say your running on Ubuntu but without a pc.

Do you simply want to know what bits to put in it?

Well I believe where this is leading to is Dan wants to get prepared. An opensource program called Xbox Media Center (xbmc.org) is designed to make the desktop one big media center! It has a considerable amount of eye candy and runs quite well. If you have an LCD or Plasma TV you will be able to use the VGA or HDMI to input the video from your tower. Lots of documentation and tutorial videos are on the web. I used YouTube.com to help get mine setup.

Once the program is installed you can have it launch when the computer boots. And its also possible to use a Wii remote with ubuntu to navigate through the menus.

    -Hope this helps.
