I recently received an email where the sender name was my sister's name, her original last name and the name she took when she married. I'm guessing maybe someone gained access to her account, but the problem is, the email the message was sent from was williamepley@rocketmail.com, and my sister said she still has access to her email. So either someone stole her identity and is using it for the email scams, or the scammer gained access to her account.

But I'm not sure which. If someone got into her account, I could understand them using her name, but why does the email show something different even though she still has access? If someone is stealing her identity, I'm confused HOW they got her name. Any ideas?

It's simple to put someone else's name into the "From" line of an email. Most providers will allow you to put anything you want into there. I wouldn't worry about it. Just another trick the bad guys are using in order to get you to trust the message is from a legitimate source

The only thing is, how would they knew her original last name, and her married name? Unless the scammer has access to one or more of her email accounts, I don't see how they could know her full name.

Not only that, but much information is a matter of public record and available to those who know where to look

I know FB has that info, and I know what happens and how it happens, I just find it odd...my sister isn't active enough in the online world to even be a victim. Either way, I already had her change her email password.

Thanks to both of you for the help, feel free to mark this as solved.
