I have a Gateway MX6027 and when I try to boot off a USB key I get the error message

    "No operating system"
    "No operating system"
    "Missing operating system"

I have Ubuntu 10.10 running on the system. It works good.

The bios is phoenix bios v.61 or something like that.
When I remove the Hard Drive I am able to boot off the usb.
I know my hard drive is good because I bought a it YESTERDAY!!!!
    Please Help

Do I need to upgrade the bios?
And if there is a new release for the bios please supply download link.

    Hello Tommis,:)

Has the new laptop hard drive been formatted and a new Operating System put on it? Can you boot to the hard drive? This issue needs to be addressed first.

Have you gone into the BIOS boot options to see if you can set the USB to boot. It is going to be hard to help you because Gateway does not support Linux so hardware and chipset support is iffy. I have looked and find no BIOS updates.

Not all machines will boot from USB Tommis but you said it would if the hard drive was not installed. Correct? When you hit Fn10 key on boot it should bring up the boot menu. You select the USB key and get the error? Hit Fn2 on boot to start the BIOS utility then go to boot options (I can't tell you exactly where because I don't have a users guide to your machine.) then set the USB to boot first if that option is available.:)

I'm sorry Tommis. This is a problem with the Gateway and I know of no way around it. To fix this would take a Firmware update for the BIOS. Reflashing the BIOS could only waste effort and might cause more problems if done improperly. I can refer your problem to our other Techs to see if someone else has ideas if you wish.:)
