i also posted my prob at bleepingcomputers but i wasnt getting much help... hopefully it'll be diff here. thank you to anyone who's willing to try. im also not sure where i should be posting this...

so 3 days ago, my computer randomly shut down and restarted on me. so i was like "wtf was that?" then ever since that time my computer would randomly freeze. i have to press the power button to shut it off because ctrl+alt+delete wont work. first i thought it was overheating so i took my case off and cleaned out my computer from dust and such. then i realized that my PSU fan wasnt working. it has 2 fans but only 1 of them is working. but it didnt feel hot to the touch. the one that's working is the one that's "inside" the computer and the one that's not working is the one right next to the power cord.

im not sure what's causing the random freezes. i ran malwarebyte and avg several times and nothing unusual came up. when i say randomly freeze it would sometimes last less than 10 mins after start up or sometimes happen after an hour.
a few times earlier, when it froze it would make a loud beeeeeeeeep sound until i restarted it. but now it doesnt make any sound it just freezes. i have no idea what's causing it so... i need help.

when it freezes, i can still move the mouse and i can click on desktop icons and open them. but i cant get the task bar on bottom to show up and right clicking would show the options but nothing would work when i click. when i open stuff on desktop, the window it self would freeze. kinda hard to explain clearly.

i've had this desktop over 5 years with no upgrade at all (windows xp)>< but this is the first time this ever happened so im a bit lost.

it's definitely not a software prob i dont think. it would freeze whether im just surfing internet, listening to just music, or watching a video.

i just talked to my friend who knows computers and he said that PSU usually should still work with one fan only. and if PSU overheats or something then the computer would just power down but in my case the computer still has power and everything works but it just freezes so he said it might be a virus... he told me to back up my files and reformat my computer. do you think this would help?? or does it sound more like a hardware problem??

another thing is ram but i've had this computer for awhile and ram was never a prob for me. i dont run many programs at once nor do i run any heavy operating programs. so i doubt ram could cause this. but correct me if im wrong.

and i tried system restore to a march 25, 2009 because that's way before it started freezing up but it didnt help.

let me know if you need any additional info, ill try my best to provide but i dont know a lot of the technical stuff and numbers and such. thank you for anyone who can help me!!

    Hello and welcome to PCHelpForum.

If a fan has failed on your PSU you need to firstly replace it ASAP.

Power supply failure can cause other hardware issues besides just PSU failure.

Then download and run SpeedFan,could you then post me a screenshot or list the tempratures for me please.

    Jelly Bean.

Your GPU is a little warm but if that is an idle temp then I would worry.

Check temps when you are playing a game or running a lot of processes like antivirus and a few other apps.

Ok your core is to hot.

But older computers can get rather warm.

Have you cleaned all fans/coolers fully?

    yes i cleaned them fully.
i am currently using the computer without the side shell on. just one side.

while running photoshop in minimize and running malwarebytes in quick scan mode the temp changed but not much... they flicker back and forth +1/-1C

Ok the side is off the case so them temps are not true.

Your GPU is a little warm but thats to be expected in some computers, especialy if there a little old.

Your CPU is to hot and possibly gets hotter when the side is placed back on the computer.

Are you looking into a new power supply?

Please could you post:How to post your computer specifications.

im not sure of the size of PSU... how do i find this out?

i downloaded the MBM5 but what do you want me to post?

i also took the liberty to remove both of my sides of the case and let a small desk fan cool the computer while running. the temp are listed below.

    GPU: 44C
    Temp1: 31C
    Temp2: 44C
    Temp3: 30C
    HD1: 24C
    Core: 44C
    Ambient: 32C

also i noticed that Temp2 goes up and down a lot more than rest. it ranges from 43-53C. there are also no fire symbols next to any of them anymore. but still i had to restart a few times because it froze but not as often as before.

is PSU and CPU connected? will replacing PSU correct the CPU temp also? does PSU malfunction make computers freeze like the way i explained it before? because if there is a prob with PSU i just would assume the computer would just shut down due to lack of power supply

    Temp 2 is your cpu..

A dying power supply can cause intermittent freezes but its not a pure thing. The heat is what cause the first "BEEEEEEEP" that I know..

The best thing you can do right now (if budget allows) is get couple of fans! (case fans)
Did you say you had a dell this way I can point out some really good fans.
They are cheap as well. Anywhere from 5 bucks to 15.. I would suggest 2 one sucking air in and one big one sucking air out...

I have 8 120mm fans in my case and I get around 21c temps..

What are the readings on your voltage on speed fan.
This will tell me if you have a bad supply.
    List all of them

Here are my temps.. The first one is Idle with my cpu overcloked from 3ghz to 3.6ghz

The second is just overclocked to 3.2ghz (this is what good cheap fans can for for your hardware) ad will extend the life of all your computer parts!! up to a couple years!

Hey onepie, I responded to your thread on Bleepingcomputer. Not sure if you saw it or not but I am literally having the exact same problem as you. But here's the thing, I have no problems with my fan at all, but I am having the exact same symptoms as you with the random freezes while running programs. My computer also randomly restarted on its on the first time as well, and ever since then, it keeps freezing at random times, and I can only move my mouse, I am forced to do a manual restart.

I also found a number of other people on the Internet with the exact same problem as us, all starting during the beginning of April. I got the problem around the same time as you, this past Thursday to be exact.

I am convinced that this is some type of virus that has not yet been figured out by anyone, I really do not think that it is a hardware issue since I don't seem to be having any problems with my fans. I really think its some type of virus. It seems to coincidental for both of us to just have a hardware problem, along with the other people i've found as well.

I have ran just about every type of anti spyware and malware removal prorgrams out there and just cannot find anything wrong. My laptop is only 2 years old and I am having this problem, so I doubt its the memory or RAM or a heat issue, for the both of us even.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I recommend you have a system health check.

    Please click this:Prework

Follow the instructions then copy and paste the results of Hijackthis and Malwarebytes back here on your thread.

I will then move your thread to the NEW Hijackthis Section in readyness for our excellent Security Team to help you further and give you any fixes that are required.

If you have trouble connecting to the internet or downloading the software then you can use another computer.

Download and save the software files to the computer, then copy the software to a CD/DVD,floppy disk,USB pen drive or even an external hard drive. You can then transfer the software to the problem computer.

You can also run in safe mode with networking if needs be.Restart the computer and repeatedly tap F8 and choose safe mode with networking.

If you need further help please feel free to ask.

    Jelly Bean.

There's definitely malware in your PC.

Post the MBAM log when you are able to, and I will advise you on the next course of action.
