    Hi
    I my cd and dvd drives (2) are plugged in with up to date drivers, the have power and open close fine. When uninstalling and reboot the computer detects them as being there. The driver is updated and then the computer says the hardware is not detected. Olsone http://www.pchelpforum.com/cd-dvd-rom/54878-cd-dvd-hardware-not-detected.html had the same problem on another thread which I am convinced is the same. They resolved it by deleting incorrect upper lower filters in the registry however haven't mentioned how this was done. I have searched for an answer but couldn't find one, please help.
    Thank you Steve.

    Hello Steve,my first thought is to check internal connections make sure they are fully seated.

    Do they show on post screen/BIOS/device manager and my computer?

    Jelly Bean.

    Hello jelly bean
    yes I've cracked her open. Took all apart and reattached. i've also uninstalled.
    When I start up a small icon appears indicating new hardware found and then identifies the dvd rw then another icon appears and identidies the cd
    rom.
    Device manager then indicates both drives with a yellow expletive. Upon examination this says hardware not found code 41 same as the other person who had this problem.

    I've also ran malware and ccleaner hoping this would fix the registry if that is the problem.
    Over to you cheers.:)

    Hey Joe the post screen is the black screen you get on startup.

    On that black screen does it show both drives?

    Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

    Ok yellow symbols usaly mean it needs a hardware driver yet again.

    Try uninstalling hardware drivers for these drives and download fresh ones and run.

    I have asked a staff member to locate you a tech to help you.

    :)

    To enter BIOS restart the computer and on the black screen it would say "Press ? to enter setup" ? would be F1,F2,Del or another key..

    Press the key it tells you to.

    Once in BIOS look around for your ROM drives are they listed?

    Are they IDE or SATA drives?

    Jelly Bean.

    Hi,
    the drives are on Bios as
    Primary master NEC DVD RW ND 1
    and
    Primary Slave ATAPI DVD ROM 16

    they are not on screen on my computer.

    On device manager they are lsited as
    NEC DVD RW ND 1300 A
    and
    ATAPI DVD ROM 16X Max
    with yellow expletives.

    The drivers have been uninstalled and reinstalled, but after startup and locating the hardware to put in the drivers the computer then says no hardware found, code 41. Hence not on the screen on My computer window. Not sure where that leaves us but looks the same as the other persons problems mentioned earlier.
    Cheers steve

    In order to delete upper and lower filters you're going to have to edit the registry. The usual cautions apply. If the registry is not edited properly your whole system can crash.

    1) Close all open programs
    2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter
    3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

    * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    * SYSTEM
    * CurrentControlSet
    * Control
    * Class
    * {4D36E965-E325-11CE-
    BFC1-08002BE10318}

    4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

    * UpperFilters
    * LowerFilters
    * UpperFilters.bak
    * LowerFilters.bak

    5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete
    6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor
    7) Reboot your computer
    8) Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone

    This help forum has been a great help on my first problem thank you.
    This problem is now resolved but I can see no way to enter this.

    hi steve thx for reporting back and letting us know your issue has been resolved

    did that sentence mean you dont know how to enter device manager ?

    to enter device manager right click the my computer icon , and select properties ,

    if your on xp click the hardware tab and device manager is listed there ,

    if vista type device in the run box and then select device manager from the list ,

    is it safe to mark this thread as fixed ?

    looking forward to your reply

    Good job, Steve! Delighted to hear that "wonder link" resolved yet another system. That's got to be one of the best URL's that I've found ;-)
