    Hello PCHelpForum,

I purchased a 1TB Western Digital External Hard Drive about a month ago and this is the second time it has failed on me. (The first being the day after I got it!)

When I plug it in it says
    'USB Device not Recognized"

then it says "No drivers are installed for this device."

I looked around the internet for a Driver and none exist. Also when I try to click "Install Driver for me" it always fails because it apparently doesnt exist.

And I cannot find it in 'My Computer'.

This is very serious because not only my files are on there but my family's and I cannot afford for them to be lost.

    Please help!
I have much trust in the PCHelpForum Community as they have helped me before in my hour of need. thank you

    - Cloudy.

    Welcome back, CloudyLemon!

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I would suspect that the enclosure is failing, not the HDD itself. You might consider purchasing one of these IDE/SATA adapters to use in order to retrieve your data. Then I would recommend RMAing the bad device or returning it for a full refund.

    Hi DCiAdmin,

What does this bit of kit do?

    Also, what is RMAing?

Sorry I am not very handy when it comes to these things.

Am i going to lose my data??

The adapter will enable you to remove the HDD from the enclosure and attach it for reading direct to the USB. That should enable you to retrieve your data.

RMA = Return Merchandise Authorization Something the vendor would provide to you to return their product

    Hi DCi,

I still do not understand how this device works. Does it just plug into the External Hard drive and store my data as if it was a external harddrive itself? #

Hi guys, I just tried plugging in a normal USB into 3 of the slots on the front of my computer and it doesn't work on any of them. coming up with the malfunctioned error (not recognised) popup.

Is this a problem with my USB slots?

As for my External HDD, I am going to try and see if i can put my data on my other computer for now.

will report back on that in a minute
