I recently got some malware that I deleted with Antimalware Malwarebytes but it ended it up messing with the atapi files. I can no longer boot into Windows and always get BSOD. I looked up some solutions and tried replacing the .sys and .reg files with a UBCD4Win LiveCD but it didn't work. I also tried system recovery/repair with a Windows XP cd but it doesn't work because it says it can't detect a hard disk drive. However ,if I keep the usb drive filled with the correct .reg and .sys files plugged in, the Windows set up loads up but it goes straight to the install/partition page and skips over the "choosing to install or repair Windows" page.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi hmm, welcome to PCHF.

You using a Windows Setup CD to install Windows with? Only, I'm just a little confused of where the USB storage device comes into play.

Two methods you can use from the downloaded SATA drivers:

    a) Floppy Disk
Save the drivers to floppy disk. The drivers should contain a file called "TXTSETUP.OEM" if they are the correct ones.

At the very start of Windows Setup, you'll see "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver...".

    b) Slipstream CD
Alternatively, you would need to create a slipstream CD using a software tool called nLite.
Instructions of how to use nLite can be found here: http://www.pchelpforum.com/blue-scr...blue-screen-errors/2009/05/0...ng-nlite-blog/

In the process of setting up a slipstream CD, under the category of "Integrate", click Drivers where you will then be able to point to the location where these drivers have been saved to.

In the Unattended - General page, set the Unattended Mode to "Prompt repair".

As long as your using an original XP CD to create the slipstream CD (as opposed to an OEM version), you'll be able to perform a repair as normal.

Thanks for the response. Here is the other thread where they discussed the solutions to another member who had the exact same problem as me. There they talk about using a usb drive to transfer and replace the atapi.sys and atapi.reg files.

    http://www.pchelpforum.com/blue-screen-errors/81931-0x0000007b-blue-screen-boot-sector-virus.html

would it be possible to use a usb drive instead of a floppy disk for option 1? which drivers should i download?

looknig at the other thread, i see you linked an atapi.reg file but i can't seem to download it as a .reg file. I right click and "save link as" and it's saved as a .txt file and not a .reg file. perhaps that's why it hasn't been working.

Hi hmm, it was me who wrote those instructions out in the other thread, but you had already explored the option of replacing these files using UBCD4Win LiveCD.

If you don't have a floppy disk, you won't be able to use the F6 option because it will only see a floppy disk... which leaves you with a slipstream install as your last option.

I appreciate the help but I just ended up reformatting with Windows 7. I was able to get any important files off and it was time for a reformat anyways. Thanks for the help.
