is there a way to prevent the system from rebooting immediately after the blue screen ? I don't see that option to turn off that feature when I tap F8, I also can't do it in Control Panel because my computer reboots nonstop before Windows can load

its a month old system with a 1 TB western digital black HD , it rebooted itself last nite when I was copying file from my old IDE HD to the new system and won't boot... I'm using my old drive right now and I can access any files on that new 1TB drive, so I know its not dead

    thanks

    Hello and Welcome

Device Manager>Advanced>StartUp and Recovery>Settings and under System Failure uncheck Automatically Restart.

    Click OK, accept and exit.

my computer keep rebooting itself before I can get into windows

the drive in question is hooked up right now as a slave and I can access any file on it

    Hi Fox,

I read this several times, but I'm not exactly sure what your asking for there.

George's post didn't work? Do you mean you would like to return to Windows after a stop error? If so, then no, this isn't possible. A stop error occurs because Windows is no longer able to function, unlike the kind of error you would receive when an application within Windows malfunctions, you would just receive an error message.

You need to look at preventing the stop error in the first place. In this case, it sounds like your attempting to use a faulty hard drive?

I want to disable the automatic reboot so I can read what error is showing up on the blue screen before my computer keeps rebooting itself, but my windows xp sp3 does not load, the computer flashes a blue screen for a split second then proceeds to reboot itself in a continuous loop

the hard drive is a month old, a western digital 1tb, i scanned it for 3.5 hours yesterday with HDD Regenerator, and 0 bad sectors were found, I also used the WD health tool and everything is fine

right now I hooked up my old 80 gb IDE drive as the main drive with windows xp sp1, and the month old 1tb drive is a slave and I can see and access any file on it

i've already booted from Windows CD, I've tried FIXBOOT and FIXMBR and it did nothing

so basically, I want to open and edit some file (if possible) on the 1tb drive that has xp sp3 installed, and disable Automatic Restarts after an error, so that I can see what error is showing up on the blue screen and fix it

or maybe there are some boot files that have become corrupted, and someone can tell me which ones I should check for irregularities ?

    Wait!

Are you saying you hooked an old 80GB drive up that contains the same operating system as is installed on the 1TB?

You might not be able to get enough information from a the stop error code alone unless it contains a driver name as well. If there is nothing wrong with the disk, it might be something which had been previously installed?

There is a log file which is produced by default in the \windows\minidump folder of the drive. The log file will contain a much more information than you would generally see on the screen. If you can access the drive, can you see if there are any files you can upload from this folder?

only so I can access the internet and try to fix the Windows XP SP3 on the new 1TB drive,

the 80gb drive has xp sp1 and was in my old computer before until yesterday

the 1tb drive got the blue screen during boot when no other drives were connected, just happened one day

I don't have a minidump folder on the new drive, because that option was never enabled from the start

I'm contemplating just doing a repair install, but I'd rather not if I can fix the booting error first

The point I'm making Fonyx is that you should not have been able to hook the old drive up to that system as a primary boot drive if this drive was in another pc previously.

Ok let's just ascertain what is going on here yes?

You installed the old 80GB drive previously installed as a working operating system on another machine to this new machine that already had the 1TB drive with SP3 installed.

    Would this be correct?

no, I hooked up the 80gb drive, *AFTER* the new 1tb started getting the blue screen during boot, and refused to load Windows

and the reason I hooked up the 80gb drive is so that I can access the internet and google around for a possible fix for the new 1tb drive

You can't simply pop any old drive in as a primary boot drive and expect it to work, your saying it is doing.
