Hello. I will be moving into my new student home next week. We are with BT (35DL 5UL) and we will get this Hub I a guessing [attatchment]. I play a lot of online games, so I want to pick the best connection to the internet I can get. My room will be close to the router, so I am definitively going to go with a wired connection, not WI-FI. As you can see on the router there is a USB port as well as the Ethernet ports. Also a GigE (no idea what it is). Which connection will provide me with the stablest connection I need? Also is there different types of Ethernet wires that I need to know about? I a guessing they are just copper wires, so can you get better wires?
If you want the absolute best, get a cat6 Ethernet cable. And the GigE is for a 1000Mbit/s connection. Which isn't necessary unless your ISP plan is greater than 1Gbps or you need to locally share files with that speed. (Your network card also needs to be compatible) But you can simple ignore all of the above and use a normal Ethernet cable in any of the ports except the BT and ADSL. Connection stability will depend on the ISP connection stability if the router works fine. USB ports are for storage/connectivity or for using 3G dongles (depends on the router)
Get one of these Nipplepie and stick it in the Ethernet socket on your machine and the Ethernet socket set as 1 on the hub. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cat5e-RJ45-Ethernet-Network-Cable/dp/B000IAHNKC Do you have Virgin in your area by the way?
No Virgin do not provide fast speeds at Canterbury yet. The best right now sees to be BT Infinity. And even that only gets me 35DL 5UP and not the advertised 75DL and 15UP.
