The same as my last post, this may be in the wrong section. Sorry if that is so.
OK. A very quick question and I expect a pretty straight forward answer.
Is avg free anti virus good enough/all you need for a basic computer user? Only normal use and facebook etc. Is Norton a lot better/ does it give better protection?
I run the free avg, but its the mother in law that has norton at the minute and I dont want to mess her lappy up.
Ive just downloaded it for her and I thought it would prompt me to remove the norton she has with 10 days remaining but it didnt, did I do something wrong?
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome back Paul.

You can run AV products next to each other - although we don't advise it. If you are replacing Norton on that machine, you'll need to remove it via Control Panel.

Not to fudge the issue too much but (and it won't take long) personally, I would replace AVG with Avast! Free.

Hello & Welcome back, block :)

I've used AVG Free 9.x for some time and was quite pleased. However.... I tried the upgrade to free AVG 2011 and was very disappointed. My system didn't perform well with it installed at all. Several "lock ups".

I've moved on to using Microsoft Security Essentials. I know others here are using the Avast Free version and are quite happy.

    Thank you already.
Dont need anything else then? Just the AVG, Avast on its own?
    Cheers.

Agree w/DCiAdmin avg 2011 free has problems that I haven't ever seen in avg and I've been using it for 5 years. As for Avast's! free version, about 6 mos. ago I was looking to switch AV because supposedly avg is a resource hog (?) well long story short changed to avast and promptly got a bug. Didn't go to any unusual sites or click on anything I shouldn't have. that's just my personal experience. I would also DL another program such Spybot-Search & Destroy or Malwarebytes Anti-malware as a supplement to your AV software and run it occasionally to make sure your clean

    Block,

You should only have 1 ACTIVE scan AV product installed at any time as more than 1 will conflict.

AntiMalware, however, you can run multiples of those as they have different "specialties". I use a licensed Malwarebytes to protect my system from spyware, malware, adware, etc. Back when I was using the free Malwarebytes version, I supplemented that with Spybot S&D. I do still use Spybot S&D but less often with the licensed MBAM product.

As someone who constantly does BSOD's I would not install Norton, Kaspersky, or Macaffee. AVG has less problems than those but still has a few.

I recommend MSE as it seems to cause the least problems.

As a confirmed technophobe, I am getting confused. I'm willing to bow to your superior knowledge guys, just tell me exactly what to install, because if you tell me the names, ie, not 'malware/spyware etc', I will probably be able to do it. Thank you all.
    Sorry for being a bafoon.

    Hi Block,
There are no bafoons here, only those who require a little direction. We all have to learn this stuff sometime.;)

If you wish to remove Norton from your Mother-in Laws Lappy then as Hengis has said you will need to do that by using "Add/Remove Programs" which is located in "Control Panel".
Hengis has also suggested that you use Avast Free instead of AVG Free, this is because the latest version of AVG is known to cause some problems (system crashes/slowdowns and the like). Avast Free is available to download from here avast! Free Antivirus - Download Software for Virus Protection
Click on the Download button underneath the Free version (it's the one on the left of the three) once downloaded double click on the file to run the setup process and follow the onscreen instructions.

    I hope this helps

Seeking advice is a sign of wisdom, not being a bafoon. Microsoft security Essentials is easy to use, install, and for most users works. you can get it here. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Norton has many years of development in comparison with AVG.

    Hi Paul,
In answer to your specific question.....

IMHO - I would use AVG. Yes it is certainly good enough for ALL standards of computer users.
I have had it [ the Pro paid version] running on 3 laptops here for many years. There has never been a BSOD on any of the laptops either.
