Hello, I have had the asus L1N64-SLI WS for about two years now. I am running one FX-74, and with the new CS4 progs and bridge I need more cpu power. I went and shopped for another Fx-74 and the best price I could find from a vendor was over $385, and thats more than what I paid two years ago! I searched for different options and read that some people were able to run two quad opterons off this same board with some slight modifications. I was able to pick up two Opteron 8354 used cpus for under $100! I was looking at sisandra software mainboard specs on my pc today and see that asus calls my chipset the "opteron chipset" so I guess asus knew what was going on with the socket F. I have an idea about what I need for this swap but if someone with some knoledge could shine down on this I would appreciate it.

-I read that I need the L1N64-SLI WS/B motherboard. I have the L1N64-SLI WS which I believe was the only revision to the L1N64-SLI.... So what does the B stand for?

    -I need ECC registered memory? Unfamiliar with this- What type do I need? Why cant I use G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) that I have in there now?

-I need some sort of a bios hack or can I just run the latest 0506 bios download?

-I read that people were doing some sort of sodering to their board. Is that for the non- WS revision only?

    Anything Im missing? Thanks

Must have been goodluck- your post was 28 mins ago same time I was dropping in the opteron Barcelona 8354. Popped in two sticks of 2gb ea. kingston ecc reg memory PC2-6400.. I only have one cooler for now for the cpu so I could not put the second opteron in yet. Connected the power and turned on. Two seconds later monitor= no input signal boo!! Waited another one, two and wait whats this? *ye%BAM! Mobo Post! Configured bios settings, saved, restart and theres windows xp logo! :D#!#:D Never looked so good before! If anyone needs help with this mod I can help. There is hackd bios that needs to be flashed if you are using the L1n64-SLI WS board.:) There was a "revision" to the board I have, called the L1N64-SLI WS/B which was just a bios chip change.

    Yesusik,
This is a very complicated mod and I suggest you go with a Tyan thunder or equivalent board to run your opterons. However if you are stubborn like me, have all the parts, and are up for a challenge- give it a try. If not, get yourself a nice server/workstation board or an i7. Just a warning! Read on :)
If you have the L1n64 WS mobo (which I have) I can help you out. If you have the WS/B im not exactly sure the specifics in the mod- but I believe it may be easier, can't be 100% but I think all you have to do is flash the modded bios.
For the WS- What you have to do is re-flash your bios with floppy discs to get the 0506 then flash over to the modded bios 0401 which supports the optys- can be downloaded here--> ASUS-L1N64-SLI-ASUS-WS-B-0401 - eSnips, share anything. This means making a MS-Dos boot-able disc- getting into dos then plugging in your Asus update / bios discs (ms-dos loader and the new bios / asus update can not all fit on one 1.44 of course!) Also you need the Barcelona optys, (3rd generation) not the newer shang. You need ECC registered (server) ram- most important part! I found this model to be the best speed Newegg.com - Kingston ValueRAM 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Server Memory Model KVR800D2D8P6/2G - Server Memory but the price has gone up a lot in the past few months though, wow. Forgot to mention, when your doing the flashing on the WS you need the original FX 74 intended for the board, and un-registered ram. Then after the Flash to the modded bios you switch to the optys and the ECC ram. If you need an FX-74 I can sell you my old one.

Here are some good articles I suggest reading about the mod.
