I just upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to the 10.04 LTS. This is on a dual boot hard drive with XP.
I am having a problem with a broken package. I can't do anything to it, it is the Adobe Flash plugin. There is no installer after the upgrade I made yesterday. I tried to uninstall the plug in and install the installer I get this message every time: E: flashplugin-nonfree: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal. I tried what someone mentioned yesterday about (fix broken packages) and that didn't work.
Is there a way to take all the fire fox packages of the reinstall them or some or some other way to fix this mess?

Hello richardmc and welcome back :)

I haven't used Linux is years so this might not help, but try uninstalling Firefox completely and reinstall.

are you using the synaptic package manager or are you using the Adobe Flash plugin .deb installer to try to uninstall it? if your using the .deb installer then have you tried downloading it again?

I am using the package manager. So far I haven't been able to do anything with it and that is including uninstalling it. I don't know but something happened during the upgrade. I have been posting with ubuntu also and haven't got anything I could use as of yet. I am about ready to download the cd version and going for reinstall, with that I might have to use my windows cd to erase the ubuntu partition and start over, I don't know I willhave to read up on it.

Thanks everyone, I think you can close this post now. I found a fix buried in their bug report that took care of the problem.

Thanks for the post (and the link).

I was in the same situation upgrading a dual operating system computer XP and Linux from 8.04 to 10.04 LTS

Flash (nonfree) broke, and made it impossible to open Synaptic Package Manager, or to use the Update Manager.

The following fixed it for me:

    rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin-nonfree.prerm
    dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq flashplugin-nonfree
    dpkg --purge --force-remove-reinstreq flashplugin-nonfree

    Then I can reinstall it.

    Thanks.
