I did this and no damaged files were reported, I restarted and had to wait again for 20 minutes for this Microsoft Registry Checker to run. When it is "Rebuilding System Registry" it gets to 75% like before and gives me that same error message. HOW do I stop the Microsoft Registry Checker from running ???? Nothing was wrong before except the comp was running a bit slow now I have to wait 20 minutes just to get online.

epackage, how long has it been since you installed your operating system, i.e. windows 98.

why dont you try re-installing your operating system, you should have installed it after 4 or 5 months of installation.

oh and you say that your machine is very old, so maybe the hard disk has bad sectors and maybe thats why it is not running scan disk and giving all these problems.

to check for bad sectors, restart your system , while it is starting up, keep pressing the F8 key, this will bring up a menu instead of the windows 98 splash screen, from the menu select command promp.
you will get a promp like c:\>

here enter scandisk and press enter

when it asks you if you want to do a thorough scan press yes, this might take a while but its best if you do it.

also i recommend that you re install after this scan

Hi Faraz, I ran defragmenter and scandisc with no problems, windows 98 was on the computer brand new when I got it, I didn't install anything. I just want to get rid of the registry checker when I start the comp, I never had that show up before until I ran the RegistryScan you asked me to run. I uninstalled registry scan but I still have to wait 20 minutes now on start up for this microsoft registry checker. Any ideas on how to rid myself of that would be great. Thanx

k now as a last resort you can restore your registry to a fixed one, lets try that and see if it works, (it should)
youll again have to use the start up menu for this.
Use the Windows Registry Checker program (Scanreg.exe) to restore a copy of your previous registry. (After you restore the registry, you may need to reinstall some programs.) To restore the registry, follow the steps below:

    * While pressing and holding Ctrl or F8, restart your computer. Once the Windows 98 Startup screen appears, choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only.

    * At the command prompt, enter scanreg /restore .

    * Click a registry entry that has the word "Started" next to the date, and then press Enter.

    * Press Enter again to restart your computer.

dude, even if this does not work then I am all out of ideas and you will have to re install windows 98,

I did what you said and on start up it still went thru the whole "Microsoft Registry Checker" again but this time there was no error message like before. I still had to wait 10 minutes for it to scan "Repairing C:\Windows\System.DAT" so I am at a loss, I'd hate to have to wait 10 minutes on every startup.

so now that it is repaired you wont have to wait the next time windows starts.

there would be no sense to repair the registry which is already repaired every time windows starts. so i'm sure there would be no wait the next time you load windows.

but hey 10 min is better than 20 min :) ;)

yo dude, no need to take it so seriously, I am the only one trying to help you here, and if i remember your first post your computer was not in good condition to start with.

Its a computer and above all its a windows, these things happen with microsoft operating systems, If you so hate doing this stuff then buy your self a Macintosh , I hear they are propblem free.
