    BWharton,

Let's try fixing the Hosts File manually

If you want to reset your Hosts file to the default, do the following:

    • Go to C:\WINDOWS\System 32\drivers etc
    • Right click on the host file and select Open.
    • When prompted, choose the option to "select the program from a list" and Open with Notepad
    • Remove ALLentries except the default entry for localhost: 127.0.0.1 localhost
    • Close the Hosts file and save it when asked (Note: the file is saved without an extension. It is "HOSTS" not hosts.txt)
There is an example on this page of what the default Hosts file looks like.

Bwharton, make sure it is NOT saved as a Notepad file (.txt). There should NOT be any file extension to the hosts file.

    Try this.
Right-click the hosts file and click Properties.
If the "read-only" option is ticked, uncheck it. Press Apply and then OK.

    ===============

If the above doesn't work, try this. Right-click on the file again and click Properties. Go to the Security tab. Modify the security descriptor for the file to 'take ownership' and give yourself full access.

If these suggestions still don't work, post back and let us know.

Let's delete your current hosts file first.

Please copy this page to *Notepad* and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.
    1. Close any open browsers.
    2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

First let's delete the original CFScript.txt we created before.

Now, open *notepad* and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    Code:
    File::
    C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Then, save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe which is on the Desktop.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt. Post this later.

    *Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall. Altering this script in any way could damage your computer.*

    ==============================================

Now, we are going to replace it with a clean one.

    Download this:
    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip

    Unzip (Extract) the download ...
Highlight, right-click on the included HOSTS file and select: Copy

    Navigate to:
    C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\

    Right-click and select: Paste

    ===========================================

Restart your computer at this point in time and post a new HijackThis log in your reply, along with ComboFix.txt. Thanks.

The trick seems to have worked.

Let's have you go HERE to run Panda ActiveScan 2.0
    • Click the big green Scan now button
    • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    • Once the scan is completed, please hit the notepad icon next to the text Export to:
    • Save it to a convenient location such as your Desktop
    • Post the contents of the ActiveScan.txt in your next reply.

    That looks good to me!

    It's time to remove ComboFix.

Go to to Start > Run
    Type in box

    combofix /u

Note: the space between the X and the /u

    Press Enter.

    This command will:

    Delete the following:
ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    VundoFix backups, if present
    The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present

    Reset the clock settings.
    Hide file extensions, if required.
    Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
    Reset System Restore.

How is your PC running now?

I still seem to be having trouble with the internet saying can not load page (firefox) or can not display the webpage (IE). I also think my computer still thinks that windows system suite is still running. Internet is very slow when loading pages. Seems like the CPU usage is very high. Looks to be about 70 processes working at one time, (2 iexplore.exe). Basically still seems to be running slower

    Hi bwharton,

Can you update MBAM and run a full scan with it once more. Post the generated log in your reply.

I will come up with some ideas in the meantime.

None of the listed files were found in application data, but there were alot of files I sure did not recognize. The last time I ran combofix it did say that the windows suite was scanning.

Please download the OTM.exe by OldTimer.
    • Save it to your Desktop.
    • Please double-click OTM.exe to run it.
    • Copy the following text within the code box by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

      Code:
      [b]
      :Files
      C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Recent\kernel32.dll
      C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\nomlv4cl.default\searchplugins\search.xml
      c:\windows\Installer\2a951.msp
      [/b]

    • Return to OTM.exe, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the light yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Click the red Moveit! button.
    • A fix log in Notepad will appear. Copy the contents of the fix log to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
    • Close OTM.exe
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

If that still doesn't solve it, let me know. I do have a few other ideas.
