Yes. No problem there. I'm able to connect to the router (via wired AND wireless connections) on two other computers with no problems at all.

I did, just to be sure. Still no problems.

When the PC finds the uninstalled device can you point it at the latest downloaded drivers?
OK. I went to the Dell service site and downloaded the driver. I then uninstalled the wireless network adapter via Device Manager. When I restarted, it did not automatically detect the new hardware. I realized I had to uninstall "Dell Wireless WLAN Card" (presumably the management utility?) via "Add or Remove Programs" in Control Panel. I did this and restarted.

After booting, Windows recognized the hardware and the installation wizard popped up. I pressed cancel and installed the driver/utility that came from Dell. Everything worked: internet and all.

Just to be sure, I tried shutting the machine down for an hour. Then, when I went to start it up: same old problem. It hung on the welcome screen for about twenty minutes.

I've done the whole process outlined above twice, to make sure it wasn't a fluke.

Here is the system warning event (via Event Viewer) from the latest boot delay:

Yes. I am currently running Norton Internet Security (in addition to Spybot SD and Adaware). Should I try uninstalling Norton?

That'll be it - you'll need the special Norton removal tool from here:

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

Don't worry about editions etc. The one download fits all. Should you ever wish to reinstall note the various codes.

It'll work - cheers

Shoot! I got my hopes up on this one!

On elpmek's advice I uninstalled Norton using the uninstall tool but still found that I was having the same old issue (hanging on startup). Just to be sure, I uninstalled SpybotSD and Adaware in case those were part of the problem. Still no dice.

Thinking that I should try wiping the slate totally clean, I uninstalled the wireless network device and shut down. I then reinstalled the device using the drivers from the Dell site. I shut the computer down for about an hour and then turned it on... Same issue. It hung on the welcome screen for about 15 minutes.

I'm currently operating with no virus protection and only the Windows firewall (which I'd rather not do for very long).

Any other ideas?

Just long enough to test this thought - and NO longer - disable the Windows Firewall.

Does your wireless connect? If not, please re-enable. You might install the free version of AVG while we are troubleshooting. You can make the decision later if you wish to return to Norton's protection.

Tried it, but it didn't seem to make a difference. I turned of the Windows firewall last night by clicking on "Off (not recommended)" on the "General" tab of the Windows Firewall settings window. I turned the computer off over night and had the same delay problem this morning.

Curiously, when I clicked on the warning bubble telling me my firewall was off, the little green light was "On" next to Windows Firewall in the Windows Security Center window. Then it changed to "Off."

It's back on now. And I'll download/install AVG first chance I get (unless someone thinks I should hold off for the sake of troubleshooting this issue).

Should I try disabling the Firewall for just the wireless connection? (Via the "Advanced" settings tab.) Or does what I did indicate that the firewall is not the issue?

Thanks for the continued support!
