Default Modem or router

Well, I've had my Linksys Wireless N WRT150 for about 2-3 years and was wondering is my router dying now? I'm being disconnected from my internet every 10-20 minutes. I just got a new modem from my ISP 2 weeks ago and I don't want them to send a technician over to take a look at it if it might be my routers fault. I also tried pining my router and sometimes I get 25-50% loss and other times I get 0% losses. Thanks for your help!

Hello & Welcome Jubbbly!

PCHF is a wonderful place to come for answers

Have you checked Linksys' site for firmware updates for your router?

Questions:

Do you have any wireless phones or maybe Bluetooth devices in the house?

If you move the PC/Laptop right next to the router, does it still disconnect after a few minutes?

Did the disconnecting only happen after they gave you the new modem?

A lot of wireless problems are due to a weak signal / too great a distance between the router and PC.

Possible fixes include:

Setting the 'Broadcast Channel' to something else; either 1, 6 or 11. Different channels have different amounts of interference.

You could also try buying a better antenna for your router, which increases the range and signal strength. Your probably want a 15-20Db gain antenna. Probably costs something like $30.

But you should only consider a new antenna if you find that the wireless stays connected when you are close to the router because that points to a weak wireless signal.

To change settings on your router, first connect to it either by wireless or using Ethernet cable. Then click Start > Run > type in cmd and click OK

Then in the black box type in ipconfig

Note the Default Gateway and then type it into a web browser and you can change settings although you will need the router login. Usually its in the manual or you could probably even google it.

Another easy way to isolate the cause of your dropped internet connection is to bypass your router and connect one of your computers directly to your modem...test in that configuration for a while to see if you loose connection without the router in the circuit..

Download Netstumbler this will show if there are any others near you on the same channel which may be the problem you may need to look more than once as others may come and go. It will also show you noise this could be the problem it can be anything from street lights to tv,microwave, xbox etc
