Default Linksys WRT54G: Why do I keep having to reset

** Hoping I can get some help, have been looking for a solution for quite some time now with no luck/responses **

Hi,

I have a WRT54G version 2.0 router, recently I have been experiencing times where upon startup of my pc and trying to open a webpage I find I have no connection to the internet. When I do a hard reset (pressing the button on the router) I am able to connect fine right after, but I also have to reconfigure my wireless security settings.

It might be worth noting that this started happening after I was trying to get my Playstation 3 online and was having difficulty doing so. I decided maybe a firmware upgrade was needed and after upgrading the firmware, things have only gone downhill since then. This has happened about 3+ times now, and all times I have upgraded the firmware for the router. Also, everything is connected to a power bar and so I power it down sometimes and power it back up. I haven't noted when this problem occurs (turning on power bar, or when the power bar is still on and just restarting the PC)

Is anyone able to explain why I keep having to perform resets in order to connect?

Thanks for any help that can be given on this issue.

Additional Info:
Windows Vista Home Premium
NIC - Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
Upgrading to firmware provided by the site when inputting router model (WRT54G v2.0)

Cheers!

Hello i have the same router as you. Mine does the same thing sometimes. it usually only does it like once every week, but all i have to do to fix it is unplug the power cord, and plug it back in. I hope this works for you.

Hi Ankur! Thanks for the welcome

batterbee2000, unfortunately this happens more than once a week for me. Everytime I start up my powerbar (which the pc and the router are connected to) there's a good chance that I won't have an initial connection. Unplugging then replugging the router does not work as I have tried multiple times.

Any other advice?

Try testing different wireless channels on the router...you could have localized interference.

I have the same router and have no problem because my system is powered 24/365..however, I have found that applying power in a non-sequential manner will cause communications failure between the computer and router and sometimes between the router and modem.

In another tech forum we established a power-on sequence that always works and that assumes you have powered down all 3 components.

First, power to the modem...allow it to sync to your service provider.

Next, power to the router...allow 1 minute for it to complete it's boot sequence and acquire the IP address from the modem.

Last, power up the computer....

All will work fine until the next time you power down everything and don't power back up in the sequence noted. I would disconnect the power supply connector at the router and modem, then power down the computer...that way you can control the power-up sequence..

Thanks wm4bama! Comforting to know you have the same router and have some background knowledge on the sequential order of powering up the devices and how that can affect connectivity. I might just try this method of powering everything up should the issue persist. Right now I'm still in a "pending observation" type mode to see how the connection holds up, so I may post back here if there's a negative outcome haha.

Thanks for all the help though guys, it's much appreciated. And special thanks to wm4bama for the thorough description. I've posted in multiple forums for a possible solution to this and have gotten the most feedback from this thread by far. I think I know which tech help community I'll be visiting should the need arise (and also to see if I can apply some knowledge I have as well)
