The SSID is not the factory default, i.e. I changed it when I set up the router. Do you suggest changing it to something else again? I have also tried a different channel (it was set to auto) and that doesn't seem to help either. In fact the Asus machine is now dropping the signal as well. Not as often as my laptop but still...

Is there any sort of diagnostics I can run on the router to determine if it is a lemon?

Are you using the Windows Wireless Connection or the one that came with your notebook?

Try using the connection manager that came with your notebook instead. If you're not sure where to find it - please post back with the make and model of your wireless adapter.
