Ahh, you also see another wireless icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

The X indicates that you have not selected a device to connect to. If you double click on this icon, it will bring up a wireless screen similar to:

Once you have selected the device you want to connect to (your router), press Connect at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Provided there is no security enable on the router, this is all you need to do.

Ah now I understand, I tried that and it can't find my gateway. I could connect to it if I entered the details manually, switch it to auto and I get nothing

It's showing as connected, yet when you ping it times out?

What was the exact error message you got when you tried to connect using your auto settings?

Can you log onto your router page from the working PC, Internet Explorer, address 192.168.1.1, and make sure that DHCP is enabled on the router. In the same section, look for DHCP Leases. There may already be an entry in the list from before your laptop was formatted, so you'll need to delete this entry, or wait until the lease expires. Also, check for access lists and make sure that your PC is listed. Make sure there is no security enabled that could prevent your PC from connecting.

Hi MM,
When I used the auto settings it doesn't give any message, it just says I'm not connected. When I use the manual settings it will say I'm connected for about 15 minutes or so (even though I won't be able to load a webpage) and then it will eventually say limited or no connectivity. My router settings are as follows:

DHCP Server is enabled although there's no address and below that it says; Client Lease Time: 0 minutes (0 means one day).

I could take a screenshot if you think that would help you.

Should have a starting IP address, 100 would be good, and below that should show the maximum number of DHCP users, default is normally 50.

Another thought, there's no firewall on your PC that could be blocking such information being received from the router? One way to rule this out if your not sure is to try a wired ethernet connection to the modem. No settings will need to be configured for this, you should have intant access to the internet within moments of connecting.

Everything you mention is there apart from the server address, here's a screenshot for you -

I connected the PC with an ethernet cable and you were right, I instantly had a connection. As for firewalls everything's set up alright so it shouldn't be down to that. My god I'm confused.

Thanks very much for that screenshot - everything is correct there. Also, connecting up your PC via ethernet was very helpful, rules out many issues with the router, and any software (inc firewalls) running on the PC.

I think (apart from the wireless device itself, which was working before the install), there must still be a driver issue. Which drivers did you use, from CD that came with Plexus dongle? Just to clarify also, you said nothing happens when you press Connect after selecting the network from the wireless connection screen. Can you confirm... absolutely nothing? Does the button grey out for a short time? Any information on what happens when you press Connect, no matter how insignificant it may seem will be more helpful than you might think.
