Default Wireless Aerials

Hello all, quick summary.

I work at an airport, we have free wireless to all passengers, my office is located away from the main terminal building.

I can pick up the wireless signal from the terminal, but with a low speed and low strength.

I would like to buy an aerial, to connect to the outside of the building, or inside even, just to increase the reception.

I am using a laptop, so would need to buy a USB wireless reciever, disconnect the aerial and attach a larger aerial.

Would these bits of kit do the job?

I realise the two aerials are manily for TX rather than RX, but would they still work?

USB

High-Gain USB Wireless Networking Adaptor > Maplin

AERIAL

High Gain Omni-Directional Swivel Wireless Antenna > Maplin

OR

High Gain Omni-Directional Wireless Antenna > Maplin

Thank you all very much in return.

Dave

Hi davidlucas,

Sorry for the delay in getting to your thread.

The high-gain wireless card you are looking at comes with a 5dBi aerial.

The 2 aerials you list are 6dBi. As the card is already 5dBi I would first try the card and then if you still don't get a good signal then try getting a new aerial.

If you do need a new aerial i would recommend a 10dBi as the two you listed aren't much stronger than the card.

Wireless Network Omni Antenna 10dBi > Maplin
12 dBi Directional Window Wi-Fi Antenna > Maplin

The one in the second link would be better if you are near a window and also if there is any metal in the building you are in.
