Default Wireless Wifi Help?

Hi,

I have a Dell Wireless 1350 WLAN PC Card for my laptop which came with the pc, but it doesn't work. I downloaded and installed the latest drivers. I don't have the software CD but i'm assuming I don't need it if I just installed the latest drivers. I'm trying to connect to public hotspots, i'm getting a wireless router in a couple days. Anyway, under Wireless Network Connection it says "not connected" and it has a big red X. The green bars are full and the power on the wireless card is on, so i'm assuming the laptop recognizes the wireless card but it will just not connect for some reason. Also, when I go to "view available wireless networks" I get no signals and it says "Windows cannot configure this wireless connection". What's wrong? I have another laptop that picks up signals in my home so signals are around.

I downloaded and installed the 2 drivers from Dell's website. I have an old laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1200. The drivers I installed were R115321 and R90501. Here is the link to the website: Drivers & Downloads

Thank You

Hey Coco, welcome to PCHF.

You won't be able to use the Windows Wireless software because Dell provides it's own. If the device is working properly, you'll be able to see it in your system tray. It will be a black wireless icon, and when you open the software, it may well look like this:

When connecting to public hotspot's, check with the providers for any security. Despite these being public, some require an SSID for their hotspot to be seen in the above list. Others may require a key in order to connect.

EDIT: Marked as Answered.
