Default Netgear wireless problems

I should know by now that nothing in life is entirely free...

A good friend gave me his Dell laptop when he moved away. I know he deleted a bunch of things before handing it over and I think he may have been a little too recycle-bin-happy...

I've recently moved to a home with wireless. All of my roommates have been successful with getting theirs to work(we have a netgear router through Time Warner). I was told when given the laptop that though it has internal wireless, for some reason this doesn't work, so I purchased a wireless USB adapter from Netgear.

I have downloaded everything and gone through all of steps. I am able to connect to our router, with a very strong signal. However, it will not connect to our internet.

I am capable of getting onto an unprotected Linksys account with very low connectivity. though.

So...any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated right now.

Thanks in advance!
Toni

Hi guessthebetta - Welcome to PCHF!

What model is the laptop and the wireless router? What operating system are you running Xp or Vista?

With the laptop connected to your home wireless, can you please click Start > Run > type: cmd > Click OK
at the prompt type: ipconfig /all

Can you copy and paste this info into your next post.

Thank you for the welcome, and thank you for trying to help me as well.

It's Latitude D610, I think. The router is from Netgear, and is a WGR614 v7. I am using Windows XP.

My computer lost signal with the one distant linksys account, so now has no internet whatsoever, but is still connected to the router.

The information I got was;

Do you have Windows firewall or any other firewall software installed like Zone Alarm. If so temporarily diable them until we can resolve this.

Are you using the Netgear connection software or the Windows Wireless Zero Configuration? If your using the Netgear software try uninstalling from Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and see if you can use the Windows one.

Does your laptop have SP2 or higher? If not you will need to install it.

What happens if you connect directly to the router with an ethernet cable. Are you able to access the internet then?
