Default [Fixed] Strange Encryption Problem

Hi,
I've been trying to configure my wireless encryption key for a while now with no luck. I have 3 PCs on the network (2 using dongles, one using a wireless card) and the problem starts as soon as I try to add encryption. I can get all 3 PCs onto the network without a problem, I then disconnected them all and added a key thent tried to reconnect. The Windows Wireless Configuration will connect to the network and say it's aqquiring the network address and then it will disconnect, connect and repeat. I've tried using WEP, WPA & WPA 2 all with no luck. What makes the situation worse is we have different dongles and I have no idea what type of encryption they can support. Does anyone know a conclusive way of checking which dongle supports what encrytion? I've got no manual for one

I'm doing all this with a Linksys WAG 200G. All the PCs are running Win XP

Cheers

Hi Diire,
I've sorted the wireless card but still have had no luck with the dongles. I only know the model of the dongle I'm using (Netgear WG111GE), the other one I picked up for cheap, It only had the install CD with it and doesn't have a makers name on it. I'm hoping if someone can find the level of encryption for the Netgear dongle then I can mirror that with the other dongle.

Here's a link to the Netgear - WG111GE Netgear WG111GE 802.11g 54 Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter (Networks Network Adapters)

Cheers

Is the Netgear a WG111v2 or WG111v3. The WG111 models all support WEP, WPA and WPA2-PSK so it shouldn't matter which encryption you use. If you are using WPA I recommend using WPA2-PSK AES or WPA-PSK AES their much more secure than WEP.

After you changed the encryption on the router did you changed the setting for the connection in windows connection?
To to this - click Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right click Wireless Connection and select Properties. On the wireless tab - highlight your connection > Click Properties. Make sure all the details here are correct and if there is a password saved, re-enter it.

Select the authentication tab > make sure there is no tick in Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication. Click OK. Click the Advanced button just under Properties, make sure Access point (infrastructure) networks only is selected and that there is no tick in Automatically connect to non-preferred networks. Click Close. Click OK. Try again to connect.

Have you tried using the Netgear connection software instead of windows wireless zero configuration. You download it from Netgears website but you will need know whether you have a V2 or V3. You can find this information in Network Connections with the view set to details.

For the older unknown dongle - if it lists WEP only as the encryption method then thats the only method you'll be able to use to connect it. You will have to change the router to use WEP only. Some routers allow mixed mode WEP and WPA but i'm not sure if yours will.

As WEP is not as secure as WPA I would recommend buying another WG111 rather than changing the router to WEP. Hope this helps.
