Hi all,
I have been scouring the net for a week now trying to solve this issue - no success.

Problem: System CPU usage will slowly increase (by spiking) over a period of about an hour to the point where it is slowing down the system. Spikes every 2 secs or so.
Effects: Juddery sound, Juddery Mouse, Very slow PC.
Other: Disabling the radio on the wireless card completly solves the issue. Of course I can't access the Net though.
Re-enabling the Radio return the system to its previous slow/juddery state.
Only a full reboot allows me another hr of relative freedom on the Net.
Task Manager: No real CPU hogs except for "System Idle" & occasionally "System". Only other item to show its nose is "S24EvMon.exe" but not to any great level 3-5%


Hardware:
Dell Inspiron 9400
2.0 Ghz Intel Centrino Duo chipset
2 MB Ram
90 GB 5400 HDD
Intel Pro Wireless 3945ABG
Wireless Drivers: 11.5.0.34 (latest)
Netgear Wireless Router Modem DG834GSP V3
OS: XP SP2 (all latest updates from MS)
AV: McAfee Security Centre - fully updated - no reported viruses etc

Action to date:
Full uninstall & reinstall of ALL drivers for Wireless Card & Router
Removed wireless card via Device mgr & reinstall
Rolled back IP Stack to initial set (Dell site)
Rolled back PC state 3 weeks till b4 problem presented itself.
Contacted ISP & Netgear HDs - both very friendly but problem persists.

Now - armed with all that info....any ideas ????

have you tried installing the card to a different pcmcia/cardbus slot? have you run spyware sweeps and virus scan preferably at boot time just in case? do you run a software firewall?

No mate - It's a lappie - if it was a PC I'd be happy to fiddle - not real keen on tinkering inside the lappie.
I have both my windows and MacAfee Firewalls running & have run a full scan with MacAfee several times - no hits. It won't run at boot unless the schedule hits in - but I have run it just after boot with no other apps running.

Note: When I turn off the Intel Wireless software & let windows run the wireless network - the same thing occurs.
I have also changed the channels on the router from 11 to 4 - no effect.

I should mention that when I set up my old Belkin wireless router / speedstream modem - the problem is exactly the same.

Seems the only common denominator is the Lappie hardware/software ??


Is it possible that this may be some sort of broadcast storm that my PC is creating by itself ?

This may be of no help, but I was having this same problem on my Dell I6000 for a while until I looked into Task Manager (I use 'Process Explorer').
I found that as soon as I was connecting my wireless adapter, my CPU was at around 95% and Task Manager showed that almost all of this was being used by 'SVCHOST'.

Now, I had to be careful which SVCHOST I selected, as selecting the wrong one could force my system to shut down, but I selected the one instance of SVCHOST within Task Manager which was using the high percentage of CPU resources, and killed the process, by right clicking and selecting Kill Process.

I then simply disabled and re-enabled Wireless on my machine, the connection would then re-establish, but without the high CPU usage.

This may well be a specific issue for my system, but worth mentioning.

It's clearly also not a permanent solution, but may be a temporary fix if you need it.

Thanks Cyberdyne - SVCHOST(s) does not appear to be stealing alot of resources in my case but I will keep an eye on it.
