Default wifi help

I used to be able to log on to my 2wire router with a friends laptop, and my wii. But now when i attempt to connect my wii and my dads laptop, which is running vista home edition, it says its not available. I know for a fact that my wireless is enabled. The odd part about not connecting with the laptop is it never asks for a wep key or anything. halp!

Log onto your modem and check your wireless configuration settings, to do this type: http://gateway.2wire.net

Try setting a custom encryption key and using that to connect from the laptop or wii. If it still doesn't work post back.

From your post I assume that laptop is seeing the wireless network but just can't connect to it. If you cannot see the network from the laptop then make sure SSID Broadcast is ticked in the wireless settings on the modem.

Well Diire. The lappy can see the wireless network, but it doesn't prompt for a key while trying to connect. Ive had this problem before with a friends laptop running vista on this router. I changed my encription key but i have nowhere to put in a wep key, thus it doesn't connect due to no key being entered. I think..?

Hello,it seems it is still trying to connect to friends network.

Check firewall settings to see if it allows this connection on both main pc and your machine.

Make sure sharing is setup on main pc,as in share this connection with others on my network.

Run wirelss setup wizard.

Windows XP: Join a network

When trying to connect refresh networks list on the left hand side or try setup network listed there also.

To join the Vista network using an XP pc then the work groupe must be the same as Vista not XP.XP default is MSHOME.
Check the work groupe name make sure it is same on all pcs on the same network.

Ahh jellybean i wasn't very clear, I meant my friends laptop had vista, and we attempted to connect it to my router and it did the same thing it does now. While trying to connect it doesn't prompt me for a wep key or anything like it usually would.

You'll have to set up the connection on the Vista manually. On the connect to a network window - click Setup a connection or network.

Type the network name - which would have been on the previous window > Select the security and encryption type > type in the key. Tick the box - Start this connection automatically.

Also if your modem supports it - I would WPA-PSK instead of WEP. WEP is not secure. If it doesn't support WPA-PSK then I would buy a wireless that does and disable the wireless on the modem.
