Default Which Router

I currently operate one PC which I have connected to my router and we have four wireless laptops. I use a NETGEAR DG834GT ADSL router and I do find that on the wireless the connection can be very slow, even when they are in the same room as me.

Should I be using a different/better router?

Hello and welcome to PC Help Forum.

This may not be a router problem.

Have you tried rebooting the modem?Turn off for 1-2 mins then power back on.

When Laptops are to close to the router the connection can become slow or low.

Also that many laptops in same room I would say no wonder your connection drops?

Also who is your internet service providor and what speed broad band do you have?

Are you on dialup or cable?

Also do this on each PC/Laptop,open a web page click on tools scroll to internet options and open it and delete temp files/history/cookies.

Again if this router is connected via usb not eithernet,USB will slow your speed.

Try this on each PC/Laptop Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

Let us know the results.

To add to jellybeans reply, there can also be some interference like cordless phones.
Your laptops are sharing the bandwidth so there are going to be times some of those are going to be slow. Also try changing the router's frequency's channel, try to bump it up to like 11 its prob set to 6 which is default.

HI jelly bean

Thanks for your reply. I should add that the laptops are not all in one room they are spread around my house.

I have tried re-booting the router but it's still the same.

BT is my current ISP.

I have broadband I'm not able to get cable.

We regularly delete all the cookies, temp internet files etc.

The router is connected via ethernet I think, is that the cable that goes into the phoneline in the back of your computer?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I do have a wireless phone on my desk and I also use a wireless keyboard, could any of these been affecting the laptops?

The frequency is set to 11 already

The keyboard should be fine, but the fone can drop a connection.
